Thunder sweeps starts and ends with five-run innings

(Trenton, NJ)- Kevin Howard's three-run homer completed a five-run 1st Inning to lead Trenton to a 9-1 win in Game #1 of their Sunday doubleheader against the Connecticut Defenders. The Thunder then won the nightcap, 6-5, by scoring five runs in their last at-bat

Trenton (40-35) took advantage of two Defenders errors to score their first run in the opener. SS Felix Escalona delivered an RBI single off Connecticut starter Garrett Broshuis for a 2-0 lead followed by the three-run homer by Howard. The Thunder added three more runs in the 4th Inning on a two-run double by LF Vince Faison and a sacrifice fly from RF Bronson Sardinha. Broshuis (3-5) allowed eight runs (three earned) on eight hits in four innings in the loss.

Thunder starter Tyler Clippard worked 4 1/3 shutout innings, but left the game as he is scheduled to make his next start on three days rest. Jesus Colome (2-0) worked two innings of relief for the win.

In the second game, Connecticut (32-41) ran out to a 5-1 lead thanks in part to 1B Travis Ishikawa. He produced their first run in the 1st Inning on a fielder's choice and then added a three-run homer off Thunder starter Matt DeSalvo in the 5th Inning for a 5-0 lead. Ishikawa had two homers and five RBI in the doubleheader. DeSalvo allowed five runs (four earned) in five innings.

The Defenders got six strong innings from starter Pat Misch, but went to the bullpen in the 7th Inning and it cost them. Billy Sadler saw the first two batters reach base (hit, walk) and then allowed an RBI single to LF Justin Christian. Howard then blooped a two-run single to left field to cut it to a 5-4 game. After a fielder's choice loaded the bases, Sadler struck out CF Brett Gardner. Reliever Joe Bateman entered the game for Connecticut and he gave up the game-winning two-run single to 2B Gabe Lopez.

Trenton reliever Jeff Kennard (2-1) tossed two scoreless innings for the win.

The Thunder, which pick 1 1/2 games on 1st Place Portland Sea Dogs, wrap up theri series with the Defenders on Monday at 7:05 PM. Jeff Karstens (3-0, 2.66) starts for Trenton against the Defenders' Jesse Floyd (1-7, 3.78).
