Borrell, Julianel and Brunet combine to shut out New Hampshire
Manchester, NH -Three Trenton Thunder pitchers combined on a six-hit shutout Wednesday night as the Thunder handed the New Hampshire Fisher Cats their 12th loss in 13 games, 8-0.
Trenton (56-54) scored three runs in the top of the first inning against New Hampshire starter and losing pitcher David Purcey (0-2). Purcey issued three walks, including a bases-loaded free pass to Eric Duncan (1-for-3, 2 R, 3 BB) to stake the Thunder to a 1-0 lead. Omir Santos added a two-run single.
The Thunder extended its lead to 4-0 lead in the second inning. Ramiro Pena struck out but reached base on Purcey's wild pitch. Pena would later race home from third base when Erik Kratz was charged with a passed ball.
Two Rob Cosby throwing errors in the fifth inning allowed Trenton to tack on another run. JT Stotts reached second base on the first error with one out and scored when Cosby threw wildly on Pena's two-out grounder, making it 5-0.
Eastern League home run leader Shelly Duncan put the finishing touches on the shutout, smacking his 27th homer of the year, a three-run blast over the leftfield wall with two outs in the top of the ninth inning off Bubbie Buzachero.
Trenton's Danny Borrell (4 IP), Ben Julianel (3 IP) and Michael Brunet (2 IP) held the New Hampshire offense in check, as the Thunder took the second game of the four-game series. Julianel (3-2) earned the win, allowing two hits and striking out.
Purcey took the loss, allowing four runs -three earned- on five hits in five innings. He struck out six and walked five in his second Eastern League start.
Curtis Thigpen (2-for-4) and Erik Kratz (2-for-3) led the offense for New Hampshire (52-57), which falls 3.5 games behind Trenton for the final Northern Division playoff spot.
The Fisher Cats and Thunder wrap up their four-game series Thursday night at 6:35pm. Right-hander Vince Perkins (3-6, 4.12) pitches for New Hampshire against Trenton righty Steven White (0-3, 7.29). Thursday night is Kenny Rogers Look-a-Like contest at Fisher Cats Ballpark. For information or to obtain tickets, visit www.nhfishercats.com or call (603) 641-2005.
