Chesapeake Baysox News Release
BOWIE, Md. - The Baysox' power surge continued on Wednesday, as a pair of home runs carried Bowie to a 3-1 victory over Norwich at Prince George's Stadium.
A two-run blast by Morgan Clendenin and a solo shot by Joey Hammond supported another strong start by Cory Morris. The right-hander gave up just four hits in 5.1 innings while striking out six.
The Baysox (55-55) jumped out to a 2-0 in the second. With one out, Markakis lined a double down the rightfield line. Clendenin then lofted a pitch by Chris Begg just over the wall in left-center, his sixth home run of the season.
"It looked like a ballgame where both pitchers were on their game, and Morgan broke it open," Baysox manager Don Werner said.
Morris cruised through the first four innings but control problems made for a sticky situation in the fifth. He retired the first two batters, but sandwiched a pair of walks around a single to load the bases. Morris (6-4) escaped the inning unscathed by striking out Kevin Frandsen.
The Navigators cut Bowie's lead to one when Dan Ortmeier led off the sixth with a homer off Morris. He hit a hard liner that just made it over the fence in right field, making it a 2-1 game.
Hammond gave the Baysox a bit of breathing room with his two-out blast in the bottom of the seventh. It was his first home run at Prince George's Stadium this season.
"It was a big lift to get that extra run," Werner said. "Joey's a hard-worker, always putting extra time in, and he got a high fastball and just hammered it."
Scott Rice, Ryan Keefer, and Sendy Rleal threw 3.2 combined scoreless innings in relief to seal the win.
BAYSOX NOTES: Rleal picked up his 12th save of the season and his first at home since July 9. He is now just three away from tying the team record for consecutive saves in a season, set earlier this year by current Oriole Chris Ray... The Baysox entered this homestand having hit just 18 home runs in 51 home games. Bowie has five circuit clouts in the first three games of this series.
ON DECK: The Baysox aim to make it three of four against Norwich as they square off Thursday at 11:05 a.m. LHP Eric DuBose (7-10, 3,38) will face LHP Brian Mazone (6-7, 3.47) in the series finale.
