Thunder Roster Gets Power Boost
August 25, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Stockton Thunder News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Thunder, the proud ECHL affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League and Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League, has agreed to contract terms with rookie free agent right wing Colin Power, Thunder head coach Matt Thomas announced today. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Power increases the Thunder roster total to 13 players (eight forwards and five defensemen).
"Colin is a player who has the potential to become a fan favorite in Stockton," said Thomas. "He has a fearless approach every shift. His ability to deliver hard hits and willingness to go to the front of the net and in the corners makes him a force for opposing defensemen. His maturity with junior and Canadian university experience make him a valuable addition in bolstering our offensive and physical game."
Colin Power's career statistics
Power, 25, transitions to the professional ranks after spending the last four years (2005-09) of college hockey at St. Mary's (CIS) University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, skating in 112 career games while scoring 40 points (22g-18a) and collecting 160 penalty minutes.
The 5-foot-11, 205-pound forward helped guide the Huskies to an Atlantic University Sport conference title with an upset of #1 New Brunswick last year, headlining a campaign where he notched a career-high 14 points (8g-6a) in 28 games as a 2008-09 senior.
Previous to his Canadian university career, the native of Mount Pearl, Newfoundland suited up in 253 career junior games in four seasons (2001-05) with the Guelph Storm and Toronto St. Michael's Majors of the Ontario Hockey League, scoring 87 points (41g-46a) and compiling 373 penalty minutes.
In 2004-05, his final year of junior hockey, Power enjoyed career-highs in all scoring categories with 31 points (12g-19a) and added 123 penalty minutes in 53 games for Toronto.
"Playing a physical brand of hockey is an aspect I've always taken pride in bringing to the game," said Power. "I like how a big hit can set the tone for your team and excite the fans, so I'm looking forward to bringing that to Stockton this year. I've heard about their amazing fan base, how often they pack the rink and the nice weather in California, so it will be an exciting atmosphere to join this year."
The Thunder returns to the ice for preseason play on Thursday, Oct. 8 against the Bakersfield Condors, starting at 7:00 p.m. at Stockton Arena. The 2009-10 season, the fifth-year anniversary for the team, launches on Friday, Oct. 16 at Qwest Arena against the Idaho Steelheads at 6:10 p.m. and the Thunder home opener is Friday, Oct. 23 against the Ontario Reign at 7:30 p.m. at Stockton Arena.
The Thunder was voted "Best Local Sports Team" by readers of the San Joaquin Magazine, has led the ECHL in attendance for four consecutive seasons and drew 223,854 fans to Stockton Arena in 2008-09. Season Tickets for 2009-10 are on sale now.
