Ketchum kid signs with Steelheads
August 25, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release
(Boise, ID) - Defenseman Cody Lampl has agreed to terms with the ECHL's Idaho Steelheads, becoming the first homegrown athlete in the history of the organization that began play in 1997.
Lampl hails from Ketchum, ID, about 160 miles east of Boise in the Wood River Valley. Ketchum neighbors the popular resort community of Sun Valley.
"There was no high school hockey in Boise when I started playing and the Steelheads were just getting going," Lampl said. "But, as I grew up, I looked up to guys like (former Steelhead stars) Marco Pietroniro, Cal Ingraham, and Jeremy Mylymok."
Lampl, 23, attended Wood River High School for two years before leaving to play junior hockey, ultimately ending up at Colorado College in Colorado Springs. In four seasons at CC, Lampl had 20 points (6 goals, 14 assists) for the Tigers. He spent two years as a teammate of former Steelhead goaltender Matt Zaba and one year with fellow newcomer Weston Tardy.
"Cody is breaking the ice in Idaho," head coach Derek Laxdal said. "Last year, it was (Spokane native) Ben (Nelson), and this year it's Cody. Hockey in the region is growing and we're excited to watch him grow as a player."
Lampl's parents and two sisters still live in the Ketchum community.
