Hidalgo, TX (April 4th) - Despite a late charge by Wichita, the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees held off the Thunder and won Game three Wednesday night 5-2 at State Farm Arena. Dustin Donaghy and Kevin Young provided the offense for the Thunder in the losing effort. Wichita still leads the series 2-1 and will look to avenge the loss tomorrow night in Game 4.
Rio Grande Valley scored first for the third straight game in the series as Zac Pearson put a wrist shot in at 11:12 to make it 1-0. The Killer Bees added to the lead off a face-off win and Cody Carlson scored to make it 2-0 at 14:34 of the first period.
The Killer Bees kept the momentum going, scoring twice in the first minute of the second period. Dan Gendur blasted a slap shot 12 seconds into the period past Thunder starter Adam Russo to make it 3-0. Russo was taken out for back-up Bryan Hogan, but the Bees added another 33 seconds later. Aaron Lee found a puck at the right circle and wristed it past Hogan to make it 4-0. Wichita got one back at 5:27 when Kevin Young put a snap shot on net that got by Bees goalie John Murray to make it 4-1.
Wichita was all over Rio Grande Valley in the third and cut the lead to two when Chris Greene stole the puck on the fore-check and dished in front where Donaghy (2) was able to find the net to make it 4-2. However, Murray was able to stay strong the rest of the way and the Killer Bees added an empty-netter to make it 5-2.
The win stops a nine-game losing skid in the post-season for Rio Grande Valley. Wichita was 0-for-1 on the power play and Rio Grande went 0-for-3.
