Torino, ITALY - Stockton Thunder forward Maris Ziedins helped guide the Latvian national hockey team to a nearly-missed comeback, part of a 6-3 Latvia loss to Slovakia at the 2006 Winter Olympic hockey tournament on Thursday at Torino Esposizioni.

Ziedins, in his first year with the Thunder, went scoreless while recording one shot on goal. Trailing 4-1, Latvia staged a furious second period comeback to trail 4-3 on goals from Martins Cipulis and Aleksandrs Nizivijs, followed by a string of show-stopping saves by Slovakia goaltender Jan Lasak to keep the game at a one-goal deficit.

Sandis Ozolinsh (Mighty Ducks of Anaheim) picked up the other Latvia goal, while Slovakia was led offensively by Marian Hossa's (Atlanta Thrashers) two goals and two assists.

Slovakia received additional goals from Zdeno Chara (Ottawa Senators), Richard Zednik (Montreal Canadiens), Ronald Petrovicky (Atlanta Thrashers) and Pavol Demitra (Los Angeles Kings).

Following a day off on Friday, Ziedins and Team Latvia (0-1-1 tournament record) move onto face Sweden on Saturday at 8 a.m. PT, with the game televised as part of a cable package on CNBC and NBC Universal HD from 2 - 10:30 a.m. PT.
