
Thunder defeat New Britain 5-3 in 11 innings

(New Britain, CT)- SS Ramiro Pena hit the go-ahead RBI single in the 11th inning as the Thunder rallied for a 5-3 win over New Britain on Saturday Night at New Britain Stadium. It was Trenton's first extra-inning game of the season.
With the game knotted at 3-3 in the 11th inning, C P.J. Pilittere started the inning with a walk off of New Britain reliever Ben Julianel (0-1). 3B Marcos Vechionacci followed with a single to move Pilittere to 2nd base. After a sacrifice bunt by 2B Reegie Corona, Pena drove home Pilittere with an RBI single to center field to give the Thunder a 4-3 lead. Pena got caught in a run-down to allow Vechionacci to score the second run of the inning to make it 5-3. Thunder reliever Eric Wordekemper worked a 1-2-3 11th inning for his second save of the series.
New Britain (6-8) took a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning on a solo home run by leadoff hitter 2B Luke Hughes. They would plate a second run in the inning on an RBI single by RF David Winfree off of Thunder starter George Kontos. Trenton cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 5th inning on a solo home run by Pena. It was Pena's second career home run and his first since 2005 with Tampa (High-A) in the Florida State League. Down 3-1 in the 6th inning, RF Matt Carson hit a solo home run to make it 3-2. Trenton (10-7) would tie it in the 8th inning on an RBI double by LF Colin Curtis.
Thunder reliever Michael Gardner tossed three shutout innings to earn the win. Gardner (1-1) yielded only two hits. He struck out four and walked two. The Thunder bullpen tossed six shutout innings in relief of Kontos. Kontos went 5 IP and gave up 5 H and 2 ER. He struck out four and walked 2 in a no-decision.
The Thunder will look to make it a four-game sweep tomorrow afternoon over New Britain at 3:05 p.m. Thunder RHP Dan McCutchen (2-1, 1.02) will start against New Britain LHP Ryan Mullins (1-1, 1.59).
