Big Fourth Inning Propels Portland To Victory

Emmanuel Garcia drove in two runs, but the Portland Sea Dogs scored five runs in the fourth inning, leading to a 6-2 victory over the Binghamton Mets at NYSEG Stadium Saturday. Portland, which has won the first three games of the series, has taken seven straight overall.

The game began as a pitchers' duel between Portland's Justin Masterson and Binghamton's Jonathon Niese. In the fourth, the Sea Dogs (12-3) scored on Jay Johnson's RBI fielder's choice before Iggy Suarez and Sean Danielson singled in two more. Niese (1-1) departed after Tony Granadillo's two-run double to left put Portland ahead 5-0. Four of the five runs were unearned.

That was more than enough run support for Masterson (1-0), who departed after five shutout innings. However, the B-Mets (8-8) got on the board in the sixth. Nick Evans reached with a leadoff single before Emmanuel Garcia brought him in with a two-out double, cutting Portland's lead to 5-1. After back-to-back singles by Mike Carp and Josh Petersen put runners at the corners for Binghamton in the eighth, Garcia was at it again, hitting a sacrifice fly to bring in Carp, making it 5-2 Portland.

Binghamton got 3 1/3 innings of perfect relief from Eddie Camacho before German Marte came on in the eighth. After tossing a scoreless inning, the righthander allowed a pair of hits in the ninth, including a Granadillo RBI single that scored Portland's final run.

Sunday, the B-Mets play the finale of their four-game series against the Portland Sea Dogs. Jose Sanchez (2-0, 4.50) will start for Binghamton against Matt Goodson (0-0, 2.25) of Portland. The first pitch is slated for 1:05 p.m. at NYSEG Stadium with the radio broadcast beginning at 12:50 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.

Notes: dating back to 2006, Portland has won 15 of their last 22 at NYSEG Stadium...five of Portland's six runs scored with two outs...Binghamton got leadoff hits in four of the last five innings and wound up leaving 10 men on base.
