Florida Fire Frogs News Release
CLEARWATER, FL: The Clearwater Threshers offense was relentless in the middle innings on Wednesday afternoon, pounding out 13 runs on 16 hits in a 13-1 victory over the Florida Fire Frogs at Spectrum Field.
Things started off well for the Fire Frogs. After a leadoff walk to William Contreras in the second, Kevin Josephina knocked a clutch single through the left side to score him and make it 1-0 Florida.
Contreras extended his hitting streak to three with a smashed double to left-center in the ninth inning.
That was the only tally that the Threshers would allow. LHP Damon Jones came an out away from his first victory of the year, working around three hits, three walks, and registering six strikeouts in 4 and 2/3's innings. RHP Luis Ramirez (1-0) swiped the win away from Jones, retiring all seven that he faced. RHP Connor Brogdon was able to get around that Contreras ninth-inning double and not permit a run over the final two stanzas.
Clearwater batted around in the fourth and fifth innings, plating four runs on five hits and then six runs on six hits to take an 11-1 lead. A wild pitch from RHP Keith Weisenberg brought in Jose Gomez in the third for the initial run.
Gomez was 3-5 in the game with two singles, a double, two RBI, and two runs scored.
Seven out of the first eight men reached in the fourth and eight of the first nine reached in the fifth which was when most of the damage was done. Simon Muzziotti got on base four times, including a bunt single in the fourth and an RBI triple in the fifth. Dalton Guthrie also secured three hits and blasted a solo homer in the eighth.
Weisenberg (0-3) surrendered five runs on seven hits in four innings while taking the loss. RHP Sean McLaughlin tossed two scoreless stanzas in the seventh and eighth.
NEXT UP: The Fire Frogs now travel to the opposite coast to continue their seven-game road trip against the St. Lucie Mets. The first of four games will commence on Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. with the first pitch from First Data Field in Port St. Lucie.
