Clearwater Threshers News Release
LAKELAND, FL - The Clearwater Threshers were swept by the Lakeland Flying Tigers in a doubleheader on Saturday night at Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium, falling 2-1 and 4-1 in the two contests. It was the fourth time this season that Clearwater dropped both games of a twin bill.
In game one, right-hander Gunner Mayer made the start on the mound for Clearwater and allowed two runs on three hits, both solo home runs, with seven strikeouts in five innings of work. Mayer was charged with the loss.
The Threshers (21-37, 56-67) opened the scoring in the third after Jamari Baylor crushed a ground-rule double to left-center, before coming across the plate on a wild pitch to make it 1-0.
With the Threshers leading 1-0, the Flying Tigers (31-26, 63-60) tied the game on a solo home run by Dom Johnson in the third, before grabbing the lead on another solo homer by Adinso Reyes in the fourth. Clearwater managed only two hits in the contest and fell short, 2-1.
In game two, left-hander Jordan Fowler made the start on the mound for the visitors and allowed two runs on four hits with three strikeouts in four innings of work. Fowler was charged with the loss.
The Flying Tigers pushed home the first run of the game on an RBI double by Jose De La Cruz in the second, before the Threshers stormed back with back-to-back doubles by Erick Brito and Cade Fergus to even the game 1-1 in the third. It was Fergus' first career RBI double.
Leading 2-1 in the sixth, Lakeland tacked on two insurance runs off righty Konnor Ash with a two-run single by Luke Gold to make it a 4-1 advantage.
With two out singles by Baylor and Brito in the top of the seventh, the Threshers brought the tying-run to the plate but Fergus struck to end the contest and give the Flying Tigers a sweep.
Clearwater and Lakeland wrap-up the five-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1p.m. Coverage on the Threshers Broadcasting Network will begin at 12:50 p.m.
