Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Trailing by six in the ninth, the Clearwater Threshers sent 10 men to the plate and put the tying run in scoring position before the Bradenton Marauders put out the fire, as the Threshers came up short in a 9-7 loss on Wednesday afternoon in the series finale.
Zach Green and Andrew Pullin each went yard and Carlos Tocci finished 3-for-4, as the Threshers rapped 12 hits and plated seven runs on Wednesday.
Down 9-3 in the ninth, Samuel Hiciano kick-started the offense with a double to left.
Cord Sandberg was hit by a pitch, and Tocci knocked a single to left to load the bases.
With one down, Scott Kingery sent a grounder to the hole on the left side, which shortstop Cole Tucker retrieved and tossed to third to get a force on Sandberg, but Hiciano crossed the plate on the fielder's choice to make it a 9-4 game.
Mitch Walding worked his team-leading 23rd walk to load the bases, and Green served a payoff pitch to center to score two more runs and bring the tying run to the plate.
Bradenton (35-29) went to the bullpen and called in Luis Heredia, and the Threshers brought in Chace Numata to pinch hit. Numata jumped on the first offering and stroked a single into center to reload the bases, and with Malquin Canelo at the plate, a wild pitch permitted Walding to race home to make it 9-7 and move the tying run up to second.
Canelo walked to again fill the bases with Threshers, and Heredia fell behind Hiciano 2-0. This time, Heredia came back to strike out Hiciano, ending the ballgame to earn his seventh save.
Clearwater (38-26) made a game of it late, but faced a large deficit early on Wednesday.
The Marauders leapt out to a 3-0 lead against Shane Watson (1-3) in the first, and tacked on three more to go up 6-0 in the third.
Colten Brewer (3-7) kept Clearwater at bay until the fourth when, down 7-1, Green jumped all over his first offering of the frame and launched a shot out to left for his seventh long ball of the year.
Pullin's blast came in the seventh inning off reliever Jose Regalado. With one down, Pullin yanked a 1-0 pitch over the high wall down the right field line, his fourth home run of the season. Pullin now has a hit in 12 consecutive games, the longest streak for a Thresher this year.
Clearwater has one final game before the All-Star break, as the Threshers host the Dunedin Blue Jays on Taps and Tacos Thursday, presented by Tijuana Flats. John Richy (1-1) takes the hill for Clearwater with first pitch at 7 p.m., and all the action will be broadcast live on the Threshers Broadcast Network beginning at 6:45 p.m.
