Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL - Coming off two straight losses and their first half division title defense in serious jeopardy, the Charlotte Stone Crabs had to respond with a win going into the All-Star break.

They did.

The Stone Crabs scored two runs in the second inning and held off the Blue Jays every time they came close to coming back, securing a 4-2 victory in their final game before the break on Wednesday at Charlotte Sports Park.

Charlotte went to work quickly against Dunedin starter Francisco Rios (3-3). With two out in the second, Jace Conrad singled, then nabbed second and third on consecutive steals for his 13th and 14th stolen bases of the season. Grant Kay drove him home with a line drive base hit, and after an Armando Araiza single moved Kay over to third, the Stone Crabs first baseman trotted home on a passed ball to make it 2-0 Charlotte.

Chris Pike finished one out shy of the victory, throwing four-and-two-thirds innings and allowing just one unearned run in his final frame. Nick Sawyer (1-0) ran into trouble after recording the last out of the fifth, walking the bases loaded with one out in the following inning. Jeff Howell came on and somehow got a 5-4-3 double play to end the threat and keep the Charlotte lead at 2-1.

The Stone Crabs and Blue Jays traded runs throughout the late innings. An RBI ground-rule double from Kay in the sixth made it 3-1 Crabs, but a Gunnar Heidt solo home run in the seventh cut the lead back to 3-2. Charlotte got a boost in the bottom half of the frame, as Riley Unroe led off the inning with a double and Justin Williams drove him in three batters later.

Bradenton defeated Clearwater later on in the afternoon, meaning the Stone Crabs' elimination number sits at 2 with three games to play in the first half.
