Yankees End Run Drought, Fall to Mets, 2-1

TAMPA, Fla. - After 25-consectutive scoreless innings, the Tampa Yankees (40-25) scored a run. It was not enough as the St. Lucie Mets (33-31) escaped with a 2-1 win, taking the series, 3-1, on Wednesday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

RHP Domingo Acevedo (L, 0-1) made his much-anticipated High-A debut with Tampa and held St. Lucie to one run in five and two-third innings. The No. 7 New York Yankees prospect allowed four hits and a walk and struck out four, throwing 55 of his 88 pitches for strikes. Acevedo, standing at 6-feet, 7-inches, threw as hard as 97 MPH.

The Mets used small-ball to break a scoreless tie in the fifth. John Mora reached with a bunt single and advanced to second on a balk by Acevedo. A sacrifice bunt by Luis Guillorme moved Mora to third and Champ Stuart drove him home with a sacrifice fly to right field, with Mora beating a throw to the plate from Austin Aune.

Corey Oswalt (W, 4-2) held the Yankees in check for most of the night. Following a leadoff single by Jorge Mateo in the first, the right-hander retired the next 15 Tampa batters. Oswalt scattered two hits and a walk, striking out seven in his longest career outing, throwing 62 of his 93 pitches for strikes.

St. Lucie added an insurance run off RHP Matt Marsh in the eighth. Jonathan Johnson pulled a ball into the right-field corner for a one-out triple. Two batters later, Travis d'Arnaud smacked an RBI single to center, giving the Mets a 2-0 lead.

Tampa placed the go-ahead runs on base against RHP Corey Taylor in the ninth. Francisco Diaz slapped a leadoff single to left. After a strikeout by Mateo, Devyn Bolasky reached on a fielding error by Johnson at third base. Taylor struck out Thairo Estrada and Aune pulled an RBI single into right field, scoring Diaz and moving Bolasky to third. Taylor earned his ninth save by striking out Abiatal Avelino.

Aune (1-for-4, RBI) tallied his 28th RBI. Diaz (1-for-2, BB, R) reached base twice. RHP Travis Hissong (1.0IIP, 2K) tossed a perfect ninth.

Up next, the Yankees travel to Lakeland for one game against the Flying Tigers on Thursday night at Historic Henley Field. LHP James Reeves (2-0, 1.35 ERA) will make his third start with Tampa against LHP Jairo Labourt (4-5, 5.32 ERA) for Lakeland. A win coupled with a Clearwater loss would secure the First-Half North Division Title for Tampa. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

All-Star weekend begins on Friday and Mateo will represent Tampa in the Florida State League All-Star Game on Saturday night at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers, Florida. The Yankees then travel to Daytona to take on the Tortugas in a three-game series, wrapping up the first-half schedule.

The next home game for Tampa is on Thursday, June 23rd vs. the Dunedin Blue Jays at 7:00 p.m. Every Thursday Tampa Yankees home game, fans can enjoy 14 oz. draft beer for $2 and 1/2 price regular soda from 6:00pm-8:00pm.
