Threshers Snap Skid, Best Tampa 8-7

Clearwater Threshers News Release

TAMPA, Fl -- The Clearwater Threshers snapped a nine-game losing streak on Tuesday, pushing across the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth and holding on for an 8-7 win over the Tampa Yankees at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

With the game tied at seven heading to the ninth, the Threshers capitalized on a Yankees' error and Colton Murray shut the door in the bottom half to lock down the Threshers' second win of the season.

Tampa (7-5) led 1-0 early after an Eric Jagielo homer in the first, but the Threshers (2-10) poured on the offense in the third inning by plating six runs off Tampa starter Eric Wooten.

Anthony Phillips got the rally going with a leadoff double to centerfield, and after a bunt single by Angelo Mora set up runners at the corners, Justin Parr grounded into a fielder's choice at second to score Phillips and tie the game at one.

Pete Lavin followed by hitting a sinking liner to center that was misplayed by center fielder Jake Cave, allowing Parr to score and Lavin to race all the way around the bases and cross the plate after the four-base error.

With the score 3-1 in favor of the Threshers, Aaron Altherr stepped in and dropped a double down the first base line. He came around to score one out later when Casey Serna singled to left-center. The Threshers were not done yet, as Nick Ferdinand doubled and Deivi Grullon poked a single to right to bring across Ferdinand and make it a 6-1 Threshers lead.

Tampa plated a run off starter Jon Prosinski in the fourth inning, but Clearwater answered in the fifth. Altherr tripled to lead off the inning, and Art Charles lifted a sacrifice fly to left to again make it a five-run advantage.

That initial lead would not quite be sufficient, as Tampa came back with three runs in the sixth and two more to tie it in the seventh. Reliever Kevin Walter got Cave to fly out to begin the seventh, but the next three batters reached with a single, walk, and another single that cut the lead to 7-6.

Murray came on and was greeted by a sacrifice fly from Peter O'Brien, knotting the teams up at seven.

Clearwater would take advantage of a fielding mishap in the ninth inning to plate the game's final run.

Parr beat out an infield single on a slow grounder to third, and Pete Lavin followed by dropping down a bunt. The pitcher Phil Wetherell (0-1) fielded, but fired wide to second allowing both runners to reach safely.

A groundout moved them up 90 feet to second and third. Wetherell got Charles out swinging for the second out, but Serna sent a chopper to short that was mishandled by Cito Culver, permitting Parr to score what would be the game-winning run.

Murray (1-0) earned the win by setting down the side in order in the ninth. The righty pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless ball, allowing just one hit while striking out two.

Clearwater will try for the series win on Wednesday, as the Threshers and Yankees wrap up the three-game set in Tampa at 7 p.m. The game can be heard live on threshersbaseball.com beginning at 6:45 p.m.
