Dunedin Blue Jays News Release
DUNEDIN, FL - The Florida State League has named Dunedin Blue Jays LHP Matt Boyd (3-0, 0.00 ERA) Pitcher of the Week for the period of April 3 - April 13. Boyd has started the season by throwing 17 scoreless innings over three outings, and has been a key factor in Dunedin's 9-2 start.
This past week, Boyd won both of his outings, allowing no runs and striking out nine opposing batters. Boyd also got the start last night at home against the Daytona Cubs, picking up another win and again allowing no runs with seven strikeouts to only one walk. So far this season, the southpaw is 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, 16 strikeouts, and has allowed only thirteen hits and two walks. Boyd appeared in eight games last season, three of them with Dunedin, after being the first college player selected by the Blue Jays in the 2013 MLB Draft, taken in the sixth round out of Oregon State.
In three appearances with Dunedin last year, Boyd struck out 11 batters in ten innings for a K/9 ratio of 9. In his first year of professional ball, opposing batters hit only .167 against him. Boyd is getting comfortable with being named Pitcher of the week, having been the PAC-12 Pitcher of the Week twice in his senior year. He was also named to the All-Pac-12 First Team, and was a consensus pick to be a Baseball America All-American, Perfect Game All-American, and Louisville Slugger All-American.
In five appearances with the Lansing Lugnuts in 2013, Boyd posted an ERA of 0.64 in 14 innings. He struck out 12 and gave up one earned run on only seven hits and one walk for a WHIP of 0.571. His 12 K/BB ratio was over twice as good as any other pitcher who appeared in Lansing last season, while his ERA and WHIP were also tops on the team.
In addition to his decorated college career, Boyd played for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team during the summer of 2011, going 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA in 6 1/3 innings and tallying eight strikeouts.
The former Oregon State Beaver has been sharp thus far in the 2014 campaign, showing the Major League-caliber control that he is known for. He shares the lead in the Florida State League in wins and is second in innings pitched. His sixteen strikeouts are also good enough for a share of the league lead, with teammate Taylor Cole also racking up sixteen strikeouts through his first two starts. Cole takes the mound tonight at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium, and will be joined by Toronto rehabbers Jose Reyes and Casey Janssen as the Blue Jays look to continue their early season success.
