Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Clearwater Threshers extended their win streak to five games with a combined six-hit shutout in game one, but that streak was snapped after a 1-0 loss to the Cardinals in game two of a doubleheader at Spectrum Field on Thursday.
Damek Tomscha homered in the opener, backing a strong starting effort by Jose Taveras.
Despite six innings of one-run ball from Franklyn Kilome in game two, the Threshers were in turn held off the board in the nightcap.
Clearwater (6-3) remains in first place in the FSL North following the doubleheader split.
Tomscha provided the only offense for either side in game one. With two out in the first, he drove an opposite-field fly over the wall in right off Zac Gallen (0-1) for his second home run of the season, putting the Threshers up 1-0.
Taveras battled his way out of a couple of jams early to hold Palm Beach scoreless. He allowed a leadoff triple to Magneuris Sierra to start the game, but after a walk to Darren Seferina, Taveras induced a harmless pop to second for the first out.
Chris Chinea then popped up to second baseman Drew Stankiewicz in shallow right, and with Sierra attempting to score, Stankiewicz fired home to nab Sierra for the final out of the inning.
Taveras (1-0) would give the Threshers 5.1 shutout innings, sprinkling five hits and three walks while striking out four. He exited with the tying run on and one out in the sixth in favor of Luke Leftwich.
Luke Dykstra greeted Leftwich with a single, but the right-hander induced a pair of groundouts to halt the rally. Leftwich then struck out the side in the ninth, hitting 96 mph in a perfect frame to earn his second save.
In game two Kilome (0-1) dealt six strong innings, the only blemish being three consecutive singles that gave the Cardinals (6-3) a run in the fourth inning. Kilome permitted seven hits and did not issue a walk, striking out seven.
Ian McKinney (1-0) kept the Clearwater bats quiet through five innings in the win. The Threshers loaded the bases against Juan Perez in the seventh, but Perez got pinch-hitter Cornelius Randolph out on a comebacker and struck out Emmanuel Marrero to end the game.
The series continues at Spectrum Field on Friday, when Cole Irvin (1-0) takes the ball opposed by Derian Gonzalez (0-0) at 6:15 p.m. Fans in attendance will receive a beach tote bag, presented by Spectrum. The game can also be heard live on threshersbaseball.com starting at 6 p.m.
