Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The Charlotte Stone Crabs used a balance attack to set a season-high in runs in their 9-5 win over the Lakeland Flying Tigers Thursday night.

The Stone Crabs (1-7) got the scoring going right away in the bottom of the first. With one out in a scoreless game, Jake Cronenworth walked before Brett Sullivan singled him to third. Sullivan then stole second and Lakeland catcher Austin Green's throw sailed into center. That allowed Cronenworth to score and give Charlotte a 1-0 lead. Dalton Kelly then singled to right to plate Sullivan and make the score 2-0.

Stone Crabs starter Jose Mujica (1-0) turned in six shutout innings on the mound, limiting the Flying Tigers to just three hits.

With Charlotte still leading by two, Nathan Lukes drew a walk with one out in the bottom of the fourth. After David Olmedo-Barrera was hit by a pitch, Ryan Boldt singled to center to score Lukes and make the score 3-0. After a double steal moved the runners to second and third, Brandon Lowe grounded out to first to bring Olmedo-Barrera home and extend the Stone Crabs lead to 4-0.

After a leadoff walk in the fifth, Stone Crabs third baseman Kevin Padlo doubled to the wall in left to extend the advantage to 5-0.

With Charlotte still up by that count in the sixth, Boldt reached first on a dropped third strike before stealing second. Lowe then tripled to the gap in right center to score Boldt and make it 6-0. After a strikeout, Cronenworth singled up the middle to bring home Lowe and make the score 7-0. After a pitching change, Sullivan doubled to deep right to bring home Cronenworth to extend the lead to 8-0. Padlo then singled to right to score Sullivan and cap the Stone Crabs scoring at 9-0.

After the Flying Tigers added a run in the seventh, Lakeland loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth. After an infield single made the score 9-2, Joey Pankake doubled to the left field corner to clear the bases and make the score 9-5.

Stone Crabs reliever Taylor Hawkins worked a perfect ninth to finish off Charlotte's first win of the season.

Cronenworth has now begun the year 12-for-27 (.444) with seven walks, eight runs scored and two doubles.

The Stone Crabs will meet the Flying Tigers again on Friday at 6:35 p.m. Michael Velasquez (0-1, 8.44) will get the start for Charlotte against Kyle Dowdy (0-1, 3.86) of Lakeland. Coverage begins at 6:20 p.m. on the Stone Crabs Baseball Network.
