Three Vipers Pitchers Combine For Shutout

Three pitchers combined for the Calgary Vipers in their 4-0 shutout victory over the Long Beach Armada at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Joe Sergent (1-0) started the night and picked up the win by tossing six innings and not walking a batter while striking out four. Cody Cillo picked up from there with two terrific innings out of the bullpen as he did not allow a hit while striking out two. Finally Jon Huizinga closed the game out with a hitless inning where he struck out one.

On offense the Snakes used two home runs to defeat Jose Lima (0-1) who pitched eight innings and struck out six while not walking anyone. Nelson Castro hit the big shot of the game in the bottom of the third inning to bring in three runs. Drew Miller picked up where he left off last season (19 home runs) with his first long ball of the season to complete the scoring.

The Vipers opened up the scoring in the bottom of the third inning when Castro clubbed a three-run home run over the centerfield wall for a 3-0 lead. Terry Mermer started the inning by reaching on a check-swing single, Rick Guarno laid down a perfect bunt for a base hit, and Colin Moro reached on a fielder's choice to put two runners on for Castro.

In the bottom of the fourth inning Miller added to the Snakes' lead with a solo home run also over the centerfield wall for the 4-0 score.

Thanks to solid pitching on both sides the game's duration was only two hours and fourteen minutes.

On Friday May 22nd at 7:05 PM MDT Calgary Pitching Coach Evan Greusel (0-0) will square off against left-hander Ben Fox (0-0). Greusel is 33-14 in his four-year Vipers career while Fox pitched for Orange County back in 2007 and posted a 2.99 earned run average in almost 70 innings pitched.

Saturday May 23rd at 5:05 PM MDT left-hander Dallas Mahan (0-0) toes the rubber for the Vipers against Scott Lonergan (0-0) of Long Beach. Mahan went 4-3 for Calgary last season in ten starts and also did not allow a run against in 2.2 innings of work in the 2008 playoffs. Lonergan is 25-Years-Old and has pitched the last two seasons in the Boston Red Sox organization.

Finally on Sunday May 24th at 1:35 PM MDT the four game series wraps up with Calgary newcomer Hideki Nagasaka (0-0) making his debut against left-hander Keith Ramsey (0-0). The 5'6" Nagasaka posted a 18-7 record in the last two seasons for Nashua in the Independent Can-Am league. Ramsey on the other hand has pitched the last three seasons as a starter in the Independent Atlantic League.

The Vipers welcome the Victoria Seals for their first ever three game series in Calgary on Monday May 25th, Tuesday May 26th, and Wednesday May 27th with all games starting at 7:05 PM MDT.
