Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Seals opened their inaugural season at Telus Field against the Edmonton Capitals on Thursday night. Victoria started veteran Travis Wade (0-0) on the mound, while the Caps countered with local product Lou Pote (0-0).
Following an opening ceremony in Edmonton, Victoria got to the bats in the top of the first inning. Despite making some good contact, the Seals couldn't generate a run in the opening frame. The Capitals were the first to score in the bottom of the first, taking a 1-0 lead through one inning of play.
The Seals would answer right back in the top of the second frame as Kyle Nichols would score on a single from Jamar Hill after reaching on an error earlier in the frame. Edmonton would respond in the bottom of the third, however, to take a 2-1 lead through three innings of play.
A scoreless fourth inning would set up some more offense for the Capitals in the bottom of the fifth. A triple from Gary Harris would score one, while Darryl Brinkley hit the very next pitch for an RBI-single. That would spell the end of the night for Travis Wade, who was replaced by Chris Bodishbaugh in the sixth.
Edmonton would extend their lead in the bottom of the seventh frame as Brinkley would strike again, taking a pitch off the scoreboard in left field to give the Caps a 7-1 lead with a 3-run home run. They would add another three runs in the bottom of the eighth frame, with the help of a two-run double from Matt Ceriani.
With their backs to the wall in the top of the ninth, the Seals would collect their first hit since the third inning off of Caps' closer Hector Almonte. Victoria would make things interesting on a three-run double off the bat of Chris Van Rossum with two outs in the inning. Sergio Pedroza would add to that with a triple to add two more, but it would not be enough as Victoria drops its season opener to the Capitals by a final score of 10-6.
Lou Pote picks up this first win of the season to move to 1-0 for the Capitals, while Travis Wade falls to 0-1 on the year with the loss. Brinkley led the way for Edmonton, finishing 2-for-5 with four RBI, while Gary Harris picked up two runs and two RBI's for the Caps. Jamar Hill led the offense for Victoria, going 2-for-4 with one RBI, and Chris Van Rossum finished the night with 3 RBI's.
