Orange County Flyers News Release
FULLERTON, Calif. (5/21/2009) - It's hard to believe, but the 2009 Orange County Flyers' season is already here! The reigning 2008 Golden Baseball League champs start the season Monday in Chico against the Outlaws for a three-game series, beginning on Monday, May 25 through Wednesday, May 27.
The Flyers then play three at the Tucson Toros (May 29-31), three at the expansion Victoria Seals (June 2-4) and three in Calgary against the Vipers (June 5-7). After 12 games on the road, the Flyers will make their 2009 home debut at Cal State Fullerton's Goodwin Field at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9 against Victoria.
This is the night where the Flyers will raise the Championship Flag, pass out rings and have a fireworks show immediately following the game.
Flyer President and General Manager Alan Mintz said he is very excited to get the season underway and give Orange County fans a thrilling 2009 season.
"After several months working with new manager Phil Nevin in putting together what we believe is a championship roster, we are eager to open the regular season," Mintz said. "This year's roster will be built on pitching, speed and defense, compared to the 2008 championship power-laden team. There will be seven returning players from last year joining the 15 newcomers, four of whom with major league experience. Can't wait to hear two of my favorite words: PLAY BALL!"
New Flyer manager Phil Nevin - a former major league standout - said he is looking forward to the team repeating as Golden Baseball League champions.
"My staff and I were talking today that we have never been so excited to get on a bus for eight hours (to travel to a baseball game)," Nevin said. "It's been a great spring and very competitive and we are looking forward to getting started for real on Monday." Nevin and Mintz, along with coaches Paul Abbott, Robert Bafia and Dave Bacani, have been busy preparing for the Flyers' fifth season. They have put together a good balance of veterans and young players fill out their 22-man roster.
