CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Tied at one heading into the third period, the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders took the lead early in the final frame and held on to the lead. Eric Pohlkamp scored at 4-on-4 at the 1:57 mark of the third period and Adam Flammang scored a hat trick as the RoughRiders defeated the Dubuque Fighting Saints 4-1 on Friday night at The Stable.
Pohlkamp raced down the right wing at 4-on-4 and snapped a shot that got through goaltender Philip Svedebäck. Flammang posted his second goal of the night in a 2-on-1 break and potted his third of the night into an empty net with two and a half minutes to go in regulation.
The Fighting Saints took the lead in the second period after the first period ended scoreless. Connor Kurth was initially denied on a point-blank opportunity, but Dubuque retrieved the puck and created another scoring chance. Stephen Halliday worked the puck back to the blue line and Zane Demsey wired the puck through a screen to give the Fighting Saints a 1-0 lead. It was Demsey's first goal of the season.
Flammang answered the go-ahead goal just under three minutes later. Flammang busted in with speed and was impeded from finishing his scoring opportunity. That prompted a penalty shot call. Flammang ripped a shot top shelf to tie the score at one apiece.
Svedebäck made his first start since December 4 and made 31 saves in his return to action. He was routinely strong in the first period, where he made 10 saves.
His goaltending compatriot, Conor Hasley, proved tough to beat on Friday. He made 34 saves, and routinely stymied the league's best offensive attack. He made his best save on the night when Dubuque was down 2-1 and Halliday found himself wide open in the slot on a Kurth centering pass, but Hasley slid over to make the save.
The Fighting Saints are back in action Saturday night for First Responders Night, sponsored by Dubuque Fire Equipment. Tickets are available at DubuqueFightingSaints.com.
