USL Sacramento Republic FC

Three Takeaways from #SACvOAK

June 3, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Sacramento Republic FC News Release

The inaugural competitive match between Republic FC and Roots SC ended in a six-goal thriller after both North California clubs shared the spoils at Heart Health Park on Wednesday night, 3-3.

After two tough losses, Mark Briggs' men managed to earn a point in the Pacific Division standings before having to endure another tight turnaround when Orange County SC comes to town this Saturday night.

But before all the attention turns to OCSC, there was no shortage of talking points following the first-ever USL Championship meeting between the Indomitable Club and Oakland.

A Few Firsts for a Few Defenders

Wednesday night's lineup marked the first time a number of players made an appearance for the club this season, and for some, it was the first time ever.

Defender and Republic FC Youth Academy product Hayden Sargis made his first start of the 2021 season after finishing the 2020 campaign as a Finalist for the league's Young Player of the Year honor. On the night, Sargis made two tackles, one interception, and gained possession four times while putting in a full 90-minute shift.

Recently acquired defender Chris Gloster also saw his name in the starting eleven as he made both his first-ever appearance and start for the Indomitable Club on Wednesday. Gloster - who joined SRFC on-loan from NYCFC - registered three tackles, one interception, gained possession five times, and created one scoring chance.

Another newly signed defender - Nabi Kibunguchy who joined Republic FC on-loan from Minnesota United - made his debut appearance and logged 11 minutes in his first match. In just over ten minutes, Nabi managed to create two scoring opportunities.

Both Luis Felipe and Duke Lacroix also nabbed their first career assists with the Indomitable Club.

Resilient Republic FC

Not once, but twice did Sacramento have to storm back from a goal down to level Wednesday night's match against Oakland.

Republic FC took an early lead but after surrendering two-goals to trail at the half 2-1, the squad was going to have to lift itself back up and continue creating chances. In steps Cameron Iwasa who beat the visiting goalkeeper on the hour mark with a low and lethal strike.

It took Roots SC all of six minutes to regain its one-goal advantage, but Sacramento would not go quietly into the night and two minutes later, it was one defender who set up another to complete the comeback for the second time.

McCrary a Menace

One of those two defenders who capped off the comeback was Jordan McCrary, the man who fired home the leveler and ensure the Indomitable Club was collecting a point in the standings.

McCrary's best moment was his equalizer in the 68th minute to level the match at three-all, but the defender did so much more than find the back of the net.

Defensively, McCrary's nine possessions gained was tied for the team best alongside Dariusz Formella and he won 100% of his three aerial duels.

On the attacking end, not only did McCrary score but he set up a goal by providing the assist to Cameron Iwasa's second half strike. McCrary also led the team in shots - four - and was credited with two scoring chances created on the night.
