Republic FC Rally for Tie against Oakland Roots SC
June 3, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Sacramento Republic FC News Release
SACRAMENTO, California - A wild back-and-forth night at Heart Health Park on Wednesday saw Sacramento Republic FC and Oakland Roots SC split the points in a 3-3 draw in the first meeting between the two Northern California clubs in franchise history.
The Indomitable Club responded from consecutive shutout defeats to slam three goals by the visiting Roots SC goalkeeper Luis Barraza - recently signed on-loan from MLS-side NYCFC - en route to obtaining a point following the six-goal thriller.
Republic FC held the slight edge in possession for the opening 15 minutes, including Cam Iwasa crossing one into the box for Jordan McCrary in the 15th minute. McCrary's shot was just wide of the right post.
The Indomitable Club wouldn't have to wait much longer for a goal, as Cam Iwasa drew a free kick in the 17th minute. Dariusz Formella buried a right-footed shot into the bottom right corner on the free kick placed just inches outside the 18.
Oakland leveled the match in the 26th minute off the right foot of Jesús Enriquez. Roots SC was not finished for the half, pulling ahead 2-1 in the 40th minute courtesy of Ariel Mbumba.
After three goals in 45 minutes, the intensity kicked up with three goals combined for both sides in eight minutes.
The early pressure was back for SRFC in the second half, who dominated possession in the first five minutes. Republic produced a pair of scoring chances in the first ten minutes - both on headers. McCrary headed a cross from Chris Gloster just wide, while Dan Casey headed a Formella cross just wide four minutes later.
Cam Iwasa opened his 2021 scoring account in the 60th minute as Republic FC leveled the match in true indomitable fashion, converting on shot number five of the second half.
Oakland answered back in the 66th minute to take a 3-2 lead, but McCrary finally put his chance in the back of the net with the tying goal two minutes later. McCrary had two close encounters on the night before finally burying the equalizer.
It's another quick turnaround for Republic FC, who will try to avenge a 1-0 defeat from earlier this season when they host Orange County SC on Saturday, June 5 to cap off a three-match homestand. Kickoff from Heart Health Park is set for 8:00 p.m.
