Three Takeaways from #SACvLA
September 2, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Sacramento Republic FC News Release
Wednesday's contest with LA Galaxy II was a hard-fought affair for the Indomitable Club. After taking a 2-1 lead in the first half, key contributions in the second half fended off a comeback from Galaxy II to secure a point in their first of three straight road contests.
"There are lots of positives to take from the game," said coach Mark Briggs. "But we've got to be able to deal with a cross from wide areas, and deal with the ball at the far post. We've got to deal with these things so we can turn three points into three points."
McCrary with the Save
Just ten minutes in to the second half, Los Angeles would see an excellent chance to score when Cameron Dunbar broke free of Republic FC defenders. The forward put up an excellent strike that looked to pull the SoCal club even, but his shot was denied by a great defensive effort from Jordan McCrary, whose leaping header cleared the attempt away right in front of the goal. McCrary would finish with two more clearances on the night, block one shot, and complete 81% of his passes.
A Spark from Duke Lacroix
Despite logging most of his minutes this season at left back, Lacroix took the field against Los Angeles from the midfield wing. He netted his first score as a member of the Boys in Old Glory Red in the 29th minute, carrying the ball through space in the middle before punching one into the corner past LA goalkeeper Jonathan Klinsmann.
Lacroix would finish with two shots for the match, while also boasting a game high 61% success rate in one-on-one duels defensively. His goal was his first since July 27, 2019, when he netted one of four scores for Reno 1868 FC against Colorado Springs.
New Faces in New Places
Republic FC continued to threaten on offense Wednesday even with a number of changes to the starting eleven. Mario Penagos and Duke Lacroix were excellent in a shift to attacking roles, dishing out a combined 14 passes to fellow midfielders Emil Cuello and Jaime Villarreal, who combined to create five scoring chances. Cuello found himself involved constantly in his first start with the team, leading the squad in touches with 68 and completing 27 passes in the attacking half for Sacramento. He also completed 80% of his pass attempts against his former club, while whipping five excellent crosses into the penalty box throughout the night.
