Three Sundogs up for CHL year-end awards

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Arizona Sundogs Hockey Club, in conjunction with the Central Hockey League, today announced it has three players named as finalists for individual year-end awards.

Arizona's Alex Leavitt has been named as a finalist for the CHL's 2007-08 Most Valuable Player award. The Edmonton, Alberta, native is joined by Laredo's Jeff Bes, New Mexico's Konrad Reeder, Rocky Mountain's Brent Cullaton and Bossier-Shreveport's John DeCaro.

Leavitt currently leads the CHL in scoring with 103 points (33g/70a) in 51 games played and was recently named the Oakley/CHL Player of the Week ending March 9 with 12 points in four games last week.

Veteran defenseman and Sundogs captain Chris Bartolone is up for consideration as the CHL's Most Outstanding Defenseman Award along with Mike Burgoyne of Oklahoma City, Vladimir Hartinger of New Mexico, Adam Rivet of Laredo and Aaron Schneekloth of Colorado.

Bartolone ranks fourth among defensemen in the CHL with 50 points (15g/35a) and is currently a plus-14 this season.

First-year player Mark Kolanos is up for Rookie of the Year honors, joined by Tyrel Lucas of the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs, David Nimmo of the Amarillo Gorillas, Andrew Desjardins of the Laredo Bucks and Alexandre Vincent of the Odessa Jackalopes.

Kolanos is the second-leading scorer among active players for the Sundogs this season and ranks third among CHL rookies with 54 points (27g/27a) through 57 games.

Additional awards to be determined include Coach of the Year, Equipment Manager of the Year and Athletic Trainer of the Year, as determined by their CHL peers, along with six member All-CHL and All-Rookie teams. The CHL's regular season point leader will receive the Joe Burton Scoring Champion award, while the CHL front office will determine the recipients of both the Man of the Year (for outstanding leadership and contributions to the community) and Rick Kozuback (perseverance, determination and commitment to hockey) awards based on nominations and supporting material from CHL member teams.
