Three-Run First Pushes Pelicans Past Woodpeckers 4-2

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans defeated the Fayetteville Woodpeckers 4-2 in the second game of the series Wednesday night. With the win, the Pelicans are now 59-44 overall and 20-18 in the second half. The Woodpeckers fall to 45-59 overall and 15-23 in the second half.

The Pelicans started off strong when Brett Bateman doubled in the first to bring in Reivaj Garcia. In three at-bats, Bateman had a two-hit game and reached base on a walk. Later in the first inning, Brian Kalmer homered to left field, bringing in Brett Bateman for a two-run homer. It was Kalmer's second professional home run and his first at Pelicans Ballpark. The Pelicans added one more insurance run bottom of the eighth, when Cristian Hernandez stole third base and then scored after a throwing error by the Woodpeckers.

On the mound, Erian Rodriguez earned the win in his three innings of work. Rodriguez tied his career high of five strikeouts. Scarlyn Lebron picked up the save with two shutout innings.

For the Woodpeckers, Ryan Johnson had a solo home run to left field in the top of the second inning. The only other run scored was by Brice Matthews on a home run to left center in the top of the fifth for his first professional home run.

The loss went to the starter, Carlos Espinosa, after giving up three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings of work. Espinosa allowed seven hits and had three strikeouts.

The series continues on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m.
