Three MetroStars Among Finalists For MLS Postseason Awards
October 8, 2002 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
New York Red Bulls News Release
SECAUCUS, NJ (October 8, 2002) - MetroStars players Tim Howard, Steve Jolley and Brad Davis were each among the finalists today for three of Major League Soccer's year-end awards, each of which will be announced over the next 11 days (October 14-19) and officially presented during MLS Cup Weekend at the MLS Gala Awards Ceremony on Saturday night, October 19 in Providence, RI.
Howard, the MetroStars' ADT Defensive Player of the Year and AT&T Wireless MetroStars.com Player of the Year in 2002, is one of three finalists for the 2002 Aquafina MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award, along with San Jose's Joe Cannon and D.C. United's Nick Rimando. Howard, who captured the same award last season, led all MLS goalkeepers for the second straight season in both saves (140) and save average (5.12).
The winner of the 2002 Aquafina Goalkeeper of the Year will be announced on Tuesday, October 15.
Davis, who led all MLS rookies with 11 points (four goals, three assists), is one of three finalists for the 2002 MLS Rookie of the Year award, along with Chicago's Kelly Gray and Kyle Martino of Columbus. Davis, the third overall pick in the 2002 MLS SuperDraft out of the University of St. Louis, scored game-winning goals for the MetroStars in his first two career MLS appearances--a 2-1 OT win at Columbus on April 6 and a 2-1 win at Colorado on April 13.
The 2002 MLS Rookie of the Year winner will be announced on Wednesday, October 16.
Jolley, the MetroStars' 2002 U.S. Soccer Foundation Humanitarian of the Year, is one of three finalists, along with D.C. United's Eddie Pope and San Jose's Jimmy Conrad, for the league-wide USSF Humanitarian of the Year award.
Jolley, perhaps the league leader in charitable and community appearances, has personally raised nearly $18,000 in the past year for a variety of important causes, and has established, along with his wife Pilar, the charitable Just Jolley Foundation.
Through donation solicitation and personal auction efforts, he was able to raise more than $10,000 for two families--one a neighbor, the other the family of a close college friend--directly affected by the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center.
Inspired by that success and determined to make a difference in his local community, Steve and Pilar launched he Just Jolley Foundation this past July, and had it legally established as a non-profit organization in New Jersey. The Just Jolley Foundation supports America Scores, a soccer and creative writing program in urban cities across the country, and the Foundation has also helped establish a similar program in the Jolley's adopted hometown of Weehawken, NJ. They are also in the process of establishing a scholarship component to their program connected to the Jolley's alma mater, the College of William and Mary.
Since its inception only three months ago, the Just Jolley Foundation has already raised nearly $8,000 towards these causes.
The 2002 USSF Humanitarian of the Year will be announced on Monday, October 14.
The winners of the Aquafina Goalkeeper of the Year and the MLS Rookie of the Year awards will be determined through voting among MLS players, coaches and executives, as well as by voting by members of the Professional Soccer Reporters Association (PSRA).
The winner of the USSF Humanitarian of the Year award will be determined by the U.S. Soccer Foundation.
