March 17, 2006 - Continental Basketball Association 1 (CBA 1)
Rockford Lightning News Release
The Continental Basketball Association announced today the CBA All-League First and
Second Teams for the 2005-06 season, as selected by CBA Head Coaches. To be
eligible, players must have played in 20 games, or had enough games remaining at the
time ballots were distributed to reach 20, and be in good standing with the CBA.
Coaches could not vote for their own players.
The Rockford Lightning had three players named to the two teams. Marlon Parmer was
named to the First Team while Ronnie Fields and Roger Powell each were named to the
Second Team. Anthony Goldwire of the Yakama Sun Kings was named as the CBA Player
of the Year after averaging 17.7 points and 8.5 assists over 40 games this
season.
In his second season in the CBA, Marlon Parmer finished the regular season fourth in
the league in scoring (20.9 ppg.), and third in assists (7.3 apg.) while adding 4.4
rebounds and 1.5 steals in 44 games this season. The twenty-five year old guard was
named to the CBA All-Star Classic for the second straight year and dished out a game
high 11 assists while adding 10 points this season. Parmer was named the CBA Player
of the Week on Jan. 23. He shot 44.6% from the field, 40.2% from behind the arc,
and 77.4% from the free throw line while leading the league in foul shots made (281)
and attempted (363) this season. Parmer scored a season high 45 points on Jan. 12,
and was one of four players in the CBA to pick up a triple-double this
season.
"First of all I want to give thanks to God for this," saod Parmer. "I want to thank
my teammates and coaching staff for being there with me on the court. I want to
thank all the Rockford Lightning fans and the Lightning ball boys for getting me
warmed up before the games. I guess hard work does pay off."
Ronnie Fields was the only player in the CBA to pick up over 100 steals this season.
The eight-year CBA veteran finished the season second in the league in scoring
(22.1 ppg.), and leading the league in steals (2.3 spg.) while adding 5.7 rebounds,
and 4.1 assists over 47 games with the Lightning. He is one of just four players to
score over 1,000 points this season (1,044). The 6-foot-4 guard is at the top of
nearly every Lightning franchise record, and ranks among the all-time leaders in CBA
history in steals (6th), points (13th), games played (T-30th), and minutes played
(39th). He picked up his first career triple-double on Feb. 14. Fields scored a
season high 42 points against Albany on Feb. 26, and was named the CBA Player of the
Week the next day.
The 2005-06 CBA Rookie of the Year is the only rookie this season to be named to
either the CBA All-League First or Second Team. Roger Powell Jr., a 2005 alum of
the University of Illinois, broke the Lightning's rookie season scoring record with
1,013 points this year, good enough for third in the CBA with a 21.1 point average.
The 6-foot-6, 220-pound forward also finished third in the league in offensive
rebounds with 3.3 per game (157 total) and 12th in overall rebounds with 6.7 per
game (322 total). He played in all 48 games for the Lightning with 44 starts and was
the only rookie to garner CBA Player of the Week recognition this season, earning
the award on Dec. 19 after averaging 27.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and one
block in three games. Powell dished out 1.5 assists per game while shooting 57.0
pct. (361-of-633) from the field and 73.5 pct. (266-of-362) at the free throw
line.
"That's Great," said Lightning Head Coach Chris Daleo, "The more accolades these
players receive to pad their resumes the better it is for them and for the
organization."
Tip-off for Monday night's rematch of last season's CBA finals in Sioux Falls is set for 7:05 P.M. (CST). Lightning fans can follow along with the team on the road by logging on to www.cbahoopsonline.com and checking out the LIVE webcast.
