Steelheads Host Defending CBA Champion Sioux Falls in Second Playoff Game

GARY, Indiana - The Gary Steelheads play the second of three playoff games with Western Conference teams Saturday night, hosting the Sioux Falls Skyforce at the Genesis Center. Sioux Falls is the defending CBA champion, playing their second of three playoff games against Eastern Conference teams.

Gary opened the playoffs Thursday night, defeating the Western Conference champion Yakama Sun Kings at the Genesis Center 106-98. The game was closely played throughout, with the Steelheads earning six quarter points with the victory.

Neither team shot the ball very well, particularly in the second half when the defensive pressure intensified. The Sun Kings were held to .400 shooting in the second half, while the Steelheads shot a sub-par .444 in the half. The Sun Kings held an early lead on the boards, but Gary dug in and won the boards 48-40 for the evening.

The Steelheads had five players in double figures, pace by forward Randy Holcomb who matched his season high of 32 points for the third time this season. He also grabbed 8 rebounds, handed out 2 assists and picked up 2 steals. Guard Brian Chase tossed in 19 points, while guard Eric Chatfield contributed a double-double of 15 points and 11 assists. Center Chris Alexander paced all rebounders with 16, along with 7 points and 3 blocked shots.

The Sioux Falls Skyforce also won their first playoff game, defeating the Albany Patroons at the Sioux Falls Arena Thursday night, 106-97. Geno Carlisle paced the Skyforce attack with 32 points, while Jermaine Walker added 31. Joe Dabbert and Steve Castleberry each grabbed 11 rebounds for the winners, who picked up five quarter points with the victory. Albany was without the services of Antoine Johnson and Justin Miller.

Tickets for Saturday night's playoff game are available through Ticketmaster, the Genesis Center Box Office or by calling the team office at 219-882-4CBA(4222). Ticket prices remain at regular season rates.

Broadcast plans for Saturday night's game are not yet determined. However, it is believed that the game will be airing in Northwest Indiana over WJOB in Hammond (1230khz) and WIMS in Michigan City (1420khz), following Indiana University basketball. The feed of the ballgame will also be carried by KSOO in Sioux Falls (1140khz). SportsJuice (www.sportsjuice.com) will air the game over the Internet, beginning at 7:00PM CST.
