PCL1 New Orleans Baby Cakes

Three Home Runs Power 'Cakes Past Redbirds

June 3, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

The New Orleans Baby Cakes used three solo home runs to power their way past the Memphis Redbirds, 4-3 on Sunday afternoon.

The Baby Cakes claimed the rubber match of the five-game set against the division leaders, their first series win since the first week of May.

Austin Dean and Magneuris Sierra hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth to tie the score at 3-3, and Isaac Galloway went deep to lead off the sixth to give the 'Cakes a lead they would not relinquish.

Dean and Sierra became the first set of New Orleans teammates to hit consecutive home runs since Mike Aviles and Cal Towey in Oklahoma City on July 14 last season.

The 'Cakes had grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third when Sierra drew a walk, scooted to third on an errant pickoff attempt and scored on Eric Campbell's sacrifice fly.

The Redbirds used a sacrifice fly of their own to knot the score in the fourth, as Wilfredo Tovar's fly out cashed in a leadoff double by Tyler O'Neill. An inning later, Rangel Ravelo ripped a two-run double to the gap in right-center field to give Memphis a short-lived 3-1 lead.

Sandy Alcantara avoided further damage with a strikeout of Alex Mejia to strand a pair of baserunners, and finished with a quality start by scattering three runs and six hits in six innings. In his first outing against the organization which signed him, Alcantara (4-1) struck out five and walked two run to extend his winning streak to four.

Sean Burnett and Javy Guerra each chipped in a scoreless inning of relief, and Tyler Kinley worked around a leadoff walk in the ninth to convert his second save.

Kevin Herget (3-5) took the loss for Memphis after allowing four runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Following an off day Monday, the 'Cakes begin a seven-game road trip in Las Vegas on Tuesday night.
