Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, IA- Three third period goals by the Indiana Ice handed the Dubuque Fighting Saints their first loss of the season Saturday night at the Pan Am Pavilion in Indianapolis. After trailing 3-2 through the second period, the Ice rattled off three goals in a row in the final period to beat Dubuque 5-3. The Fighting Saints fell to 7-1-0 with the loss while the Ice moved to 3-4-2.
For the seventh time this season, Dubuque opened the game's scoring. Brett Boeing collected the puck at the right point and drifted into the middle of the ice. Boeing skated to the left-side faceoff circle and rocketed a wrist shot off the glove of netminder Jason Pawloski and into the net to make it 1-0 Dubuque at 4:09 of the second period.
Dubuque doubled its lead on a goal from Shane Kavanagh. For the second straight night, Shane fed Shane for a goal for Dubuque. Shane Eiserman chipped the puck behind the Indiana net and chased it down. He fired a pass in front to Kavanagh. It hit an Indiana stick, but bounced to Kavanagh who ripped a shot over the netminder's glove to make it 2-0 Dubuque at 8:22 of the second.
The Ice would cut into the Dubuque lead on a breakaway goal from Scott Conway. Patrick Newell fed Conway with a long stretch pass at the Dubuque blueline. Conway skated in on net and deked around Dubuque goalie Hayden Stewart for the goal at 8:59.
The back-and-fourth second period saw the Fighting Saints notch the next goal. This time it was the other Shane getting Dubuque on the board as Shane Eiserman scored his second goal of the season at 11:33. Eiserman picked off a pass in his own zone and charged up the ice protecting the puck. With an Ice defender on his heels, Eiserman cut in on goal and was originally denied on his first shot, but a collision at the net caused the puck to trickle over the line to make the score 3-1 Dubuque.
The Ice wouldn't go to the locker room without cutting into Dubuque's lead once more. Off a faceoff win, Alex Talcott collected a loose puck on the right wing and roofed a shot over Stewart's glove to make it 3-2 Dubuque with 3:04 to play in the second period.
With Dubuque up a goal heading into the final frame, the Ice seized the momentum from a late second period goal to provide an outburst in the third period. Indiana quickly tied the game as Newell setup Aiden Muir for a beautiful redirect to make it 3-3 at 2:20.
Just a few minutes late, the ice would get the game-winning goal courtesy of young forward Denis Smirinov. A shot from Phil Boje at the blueline was fanned on, and Indiana broke up ice. Smirinov scooted by the Dubuque defense, and despite being hauled down from behind by Keegan Ford on the breakaway, slipped the puck five-hole on Stewart to make it 4-3 Indiana at the 6:54 mark.
The Ice would add one more goal at 13:22 as Dwyer Tschantz fired a wrist shot over Stewart's glove to help Indiana to the victory.
Both teams fired 41 shots in the game. Pawloski made 38 saves for his second win on the season in goal for the Ice. Dubuque was 0-for-3 on the powerplay while Indiana did not receive a powerplay opportunity in the game
Next Friday the Fighting Saints return to the Mystique Community Ice Center for a 7:35 p.m. contest with the Muskegon Lumberjacks.
