INDIANAPOLIS - By virtue of skating into Pan Am Pavillion undefeated with a 7-0 slate, the Dubuque Fighting Saints knew how to win. The Indiana Ice took a big step in learning how to win a big game with a come-from-behind 5-3 victory Saturday night.
Denis Smirnov scored the game-winning goal at 6:54 of the final stanza to complete the comeback from a two-goal deficit. Dwyer Tschantz added an insurance goal with 6:38 left to give Indiana their first home win of the season.
"I got a pretty good pass from Tschantz on a breakaway after I split two defensemen. I knew we could beat them," said the Moscow-born forward, who also assisted on Tschantz's closing goal.
Tschantz finished the scoring and the Saints with his fourth goal of the season. Timothy Shoup was also credited with a helper as the Ice won consecutive games for the first time this season.
The second period saw five goals scored between the two teams. Brett Boeing scored first for the visitors, followed by his teammate Shane Kavanagh. Indy's Scott Conway scored his fourth tally of the season to cut the deficit to 2-1 at 8:59. Conway collaborated with Patrick Newell and Austin Kosack.
"We weren't worried. We knew we would win regardless of their two-goal lead," Newell commented.
Dubuque's Shane Eiserman sandwiched a goal between Conway's lamp-lighter and Alex Talcott's second goal of the 13-14 campaign. Joshua Jacobs and Joseph Sullivan earned points by assisting Talcott's goal, which cut the visitor's lead to 3-2.
Edmonton Oilers' draft choice Aidan Muir tied the affair at three-all at 2:20 of the third period, setting the stage for Indiana's victory over the defending Clark Cup champions. Newell earned his second assist of the game and Tyler Pham got on the scoreboard as part of the play.
The Ice return to Bankers Life Fieldhouse Sunday afternoon for a 3:05 pm meeting with the Des Moines Buccaneers. Fans are invited to a post-game public skating event at Pan Am Pavilion following the game. Admission to the skate is free with a valid game-day ticket. Skate rental is not included.
