Three-Goal Second Propels Providence Past Springfield 4-2

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence Bruins scored three times in the second period to top the Springfield Falcons 4-2 Sunday afternoon at the Dunkin Donuts Center. It was the sixth win in a row at the Dunk for the Rhode Island squad.

The P-Bruins shot early and often against the Falcons, notching two shots in the first :30 alone. Scott Munroe was able to make the stop on each occasion, but he gave up the first goal of the game later in the period.

Andrew Cherniwchan broke past the Falcons' defensive core and beat Munroe top-shelf at 3:41. (That was after David Warsofsky forced a turnover, and Rob Flick zipped a pass to Cherniwchan.)

Springfield lit the lamp to tie the game when Adam Cracknell scored his third of the year and second against Providence. After a shot by Mike Cornell bounced past Niklas Svedberg, Cherniwchan dove into the crease and batted the puck away. However, it landed right next to Cracknell, who deposited it into the back of the net at 7:09.

In the second period, the Bruins had their only power play of the night and generated some high-quality scoring chances, though the team was unable to re-take the lead that way.

Seth Griffith scored to put the team ahead at 13:36. He ranged through the right side of the zone, switching from forehand to backhand to beat Munroe. It was Griffith's third goal of the weekend and sixth since January 24 (also against Springfield).

The Falcons registered their second game-tying goal only a minute and a half later, when Josh Anderson got to a rebound after Svedberg's diving save on the initial shot, blocking the first bid with his stick.

Less than a minute later, Tyler Randell put his team up for good during a 2-on-1. Randell kept it himself and slapped the game-winner in at 15:55.

David Warsofsky added some insurance on a tough-angle slapper. His bid from the left wing corner bounced off of Munroe's leg pad and beat him five-hole with 0:21 left in the middle period.

Springfield outshot Providence 13-10 in the third and had two power plays during the frame, but could not muster another goal against Svedberg.

The Bruins' next game is on Friday at 7:05pm against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at the Dunkin Donuts Center.
