Bears Battle Back Four Times in Overtime Setback

Hershey Bears News Release

HERSHEY, Pa. - Kevin Goumas scored 3:40 into overtime, wiping out a fifth Hershey Bears comeback and helping the Lehigh Valley Phantoms win their first game this season in Chocolatetown, a 5-4 decision in front of 10,266 fans at GIANT Center on Sunday.

The first period belonged to Phantoms forward Jay Rosehill, as he would strike twice to give the visitors a 2-1 lead at the end of it. His first came at 12:01, a redirection of a pass from Brett Hextall that eluded Pheonix Copley.

Hershey would tie it up inside the final minute, when Dane Byers blocked a pass in Lehigh Valley's offensive zone and took off with Jim O'Brien with no Phantoms in the way. The duo passed to each other and Byers finished the play by sliding the puck through Anthony Stolarz's pads at 19:09.

But the tie score lasted all of 21 seconds, as Rosehill parked himself in front of a Robert Hagg shot and tipped it through the pads of Copley for the lead at the intermission.

Just 23 seconds into the second period, Stan Galiev pulled the Bears even once more, burying his 16th goal of the season on a snap shot fed to him by Chris Conner.

The see-saw went back to Lehigh Valley, when Nick Cousins flew into the Hershey zone and snapped a shot past Copley's blocker at 11:08.

Late in the frame, O'Brien fed a pass to a trailing Tomas Kundratek, who in turn ripped a shot under the arm of Stolarz at 17:45 for the third tying goal of the night.

On the final second of a carry-over penalty to Steve Oleksy, Jason Akeson gave the Phantoms their fourth lead just 1:01 into the third. Akeson carried the puck down the right wing and made a move to get in alone on Copley. From in tight, his backhand shot eluded Copley for his 12th of the year.

The never-say-die Bears again battled to even the score and earn a huge standings point. Chris Brown would block a shot, and chase down the puck as it rolled toward the Phantoms zone. He caught up to it and promptly sent a shot high over Stolarz for his 12th of the season.

But in overtime, Goumas would finish the contest by tucking a shot inside the left post, sending the Phantoms to victory.

Copley made 34 saves but saw his record drop to 8-3-3. Stolarz improved to 7-10-1 with 36 saves on 40 shots.

The one point earned extends the Bears point streak to 10 games (8-0-1-1), pushes the team's home point total to 40 (18-5-3-1) and the overall point total to 61 (27-13-5-2).

The Bears take to the road to play the Albany Devils on Friday, February 13 at 7:00 PM. Fans may listen to the game beginning at 6:20 PM on the Bears Radio Network of affiliates WQIC-FM 100.1, WTKT-AM 1460 and via the iHeart Radio app for smartphones (1460 AM).
