Daytona Tortugas News Release

Tampa, FL - The Daytona Tortugas had their three-game winning streak snapped in a rain shortened 2-0 loss against the Tampa Yankees on Saturday night at Steinbrenner Field. With one out in the bottom of the sixth inning, a series of lightning strikes forced a delay, and a torrential downpour followed.

The pop-up storm prevented the talented but overmatched grounds crew from pulling the tarp over the infield, and the diamond quickly turned into a dam.

RHP Sal Romano (L, 4-3) deserved better, allowing just one earned run, three singles and one walk in five frames. He recorded his first 15 outs with three strikeouts and 12 groundouts. Romano has now allowed just two earned runs in his last 11 innings.

Tampa scored an unearned run in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. Dustin Fowler led off with a bunt single and quickly stole second base. The throw from C Joe Hudson eluded 2B Ronald Bueno and sailed into center field, allowing Fowler to advance to third. He scored two batters later on an RBI groundout from DH Mike Ford.

The Yankees doubled their lead in the fifth with a pair of two-out singles from the bottom of the order. Kyle Higashioka hit a seeing eye ground ball through the right side and moved up to second on a wild pitch. He scored on a bloop single from Michael O'Neill, and Tampa took a 2-0 lead.

Cale Coshow (W, 4-1) was phenomenal. He faced the minimum through 4.2 innings before back-to-back two-out singles from 3B Taylor Sparksand C Joe Hudson. DH Jon Matthews hit a line drive straight to the centerfielder to end Daytona's only offensive threat.

Yankees rehabber Jacoby Ellsbury went 0-for-3 with three groundouts.

The Tortugas and Yankees will continue their three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m. Fans can listen to the action on the Great Voice of Volusia County, AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB, starting with the D.B. Pickles Pregame Show at 12:45 p.m. ET. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
