Tampa Yankees News Release
Tampa - In a rain-shortened game on the fourth of July, the Tampa Yankees (4-5, 38-41) took a 2-0 win in five and a half innings over the Daytona Tortugas (5-4, 42-37) on Saturday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
Cale Coshow (4-1) pitched six shutout innings for Tampa to earn the win. The right-hander scattered three hits and did not issue a walk while tying a season-high with seven strikeouts.
The Yankees took the lead in the second. Dustin Fowler led off with a bunt single, stole second and advanced to third on an errant throw by catcher Joe Hudson. One out later, Mike Ford gave Tampa the lead with an RBI groundout.
Back-to-back two out singles in the fifth led to the second Yankee run. Kyle Higashioka slapped a liner into right field for a single and later advanced on a wild pitch. A bloop single to right by Michael O'Neill plated Higashioka, giving the Yankees a 2-0 lead. The base hit snapped an 0-for-21 skid by O'Neill.
Daytona starter Sal Romano pitched two outs into the sixth. With Fowler at the plate, lightning and a large clap of thunder persuaded umpire Alex MacKay to motion everybody off the field.
Romano (4-3) allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits in five and two-third innings, walking one while striking out three.
The series continues on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. when RHP Gabriel Encinas (1-2, 2.81 ERA) takes the hill for Tampa. LHP Seth Varner (0-1, 4.50 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for Daytona.
