The Victoria Generals had three current players selected in the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft. Argenis Angulo, from Ranger College, Taylor Hearn, from San Jacinto Community College, and Drake Roberts, from St Mary's University were all selected on Saturday.
Argenis Angulo, a native of Araure, Venezuela, was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 19th round (578 overall) of the 2014 Draft. He was the first current Victoria Generals player selected in this year's draft.
Angulo joined the team last season with just two weeks remaining and made an immediate impact, appearing in five games to end the season, only giving up one earned run with an ERA of 1.28. Angulo had a strong spring for Ranger College making 11 starts, throwing 63 innings with a 5-4 record. Among those 11 starts, Angulo had two complete games, 83 strike outs and finished up with a 3.14 ERA. For the Generals this summer, Angulo has 2 appearances (one start) throwing 8 innings with a no decision and one save.
Taylor Hearn, a native or Royse City, TX, was the second current player taken in the draft as he was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 25th round (740 overall). This was the third time Hearn has been selected in the draft. Hearn was selected by the Pittsburg Pirates in the 22nd round out of high school. Hearn elected to attend college at San Jacinto Community College and in 2013, he was selected in the 36th round by the Cincinnati Reds. Again, Hearn would continue to attend San Jacinto Community College.
Hearn, a 6'6" left-hander at San Jacinto, appeared in 12 games this season with 27 strikeouts in 29 innings of work. Hearn finished up the season with a 3-2 record and a 5.16 ERA. Hearn will make his first appearance for the Victoria Generals as he gets the start on Tuesday night at 7:35 at Riverside Stadium.
The final current General selected was Drake Roberts who was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 29th round (878 overall). Drake, a short stop, will be listed by the Indians at second base. Drake, a junior at St Mary's University, was also selected out of high school by the Minnesota Twins in the 49th round.
Roberts, a native of Brenham, TX, appeared in 54 games for the Rattlers, hit .289 and had a team leading 33 RBI's on the season. For the Generals this summer, Roberts has appeared in seven games, hitting .185 and was starting to hit his stride at draft time.
"It is awesome to hear their names called on draft day, "commented Mike Yokum, Vice President and General Manager for the Victoria Generals. "When putting the team together, you look for the best in the country knowing that you may lose some of your best guys early. It is bitter sweet as you see these guys move on but you are so happy for their opportunity to play professional ball. "
The Generals also had two former players that were selected in the 2014 draft. Corey Holmes, a General in 2012 from Waco, TX, was selected by the New York Yankees in the 20th round (602 overall) and Alex Klonowski, a General in 2012-2013 from Kearney, MO, was selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the 29th round (869 overall).
