Thorns FC Register 6-0 Shutout Win over Orlando Pride at Providence Park

PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland Thorns FC recorded a second consecutive shutout win with a 6-0 victory over the Orlando Pride at Providence Park on Sunday afternoon. Five different players scored a goal for Portland (Hina Sugita, Becky Sauerbrunn, Sophia Smith, Natalia Kuikka, Taylor Porter), while four players added an assist (Janine Beckie, Sauerbrunn, Olivia Moultrie, Yazmeen Ryan). Notably, Smith recorded a brace in a second consecutive match, while Sauerbrunn notched a goal and an assist - her firsts with Portland. Thorns FC are now unbeaten in five straight matches (3-0-2).

Last Five's Form

Today's win extended Portland's unbeaten streak to five straight matches (3-0-2). Notably, Thorns FC have tallied multiple goals in each of those matches, marking the first time the team has scored multiple goals in five straight regular season matches. During its unbeaten run, Portland has scored 17 goals and conceded four, earning three shutouts. Including Thorns FC's 4-0 win over Houston on June 12, the team has registered back-to-back shutout wins with four or more goals for the first time in club history. They became the second team to score 10 or more goals in a two-match span in NWSL history, taking 20+ shots in each of those games. Playmakers and Goal Scorers

Sugita opened Portland's account today, scoring her second goal of the season. Beckie earned the assist, her second of the season. Sauerbrunn registered her first career goal and assist with Thorns FC. The goal marked the fifth of her NWSL career. Sophia Smith notched a second-half brace, scoring in a third straight match and recording a goal contribution in a fifth straight match (6g, 2a). Notably, with her brace against Houston on June 12, Smith became the first player in club history to record back-to-back multi-goal games. Smith now leads the team with eight goals, already surpassing her final 2021 tally (7). Kuikka got on the scoresheet with her second-half goal, marking her first NWSL regular season goal, with an assist from Moultrie. In Portland's last two matches, Moultrie has registered a goal and two assists. Closing out the final score, Porter scored her first NWSL goal assisted by Ryan. The assist was Ryan's second of the match and her team-leading third of the season.

Goal-Scoring Plays

POR - Hina Sugita (Janine Beckie), 21st minute: Just outside of the 18-yard box and from the right side, Beckie served a perfectly weighted cross behind Orlando's backline in the box. Making a darting run in, Sugita struck the ball out of the air sending a full volley into the goal.

POR - Becky Sauerbrunn, 25th minute: Sam Coffey fired a free kick on frame from the left wing, forcing Orlando's goalkeeper Erin McLeod to make a diving save and deflect the shot. Sauerbrunn followed it up and put the loose ball in the back of the net.

POR - Sophia Smith (Becky Sauerbrunn), 63rd minute: Sauerbrunn played the ball to Smith up the middle of the field. Smith turned over her left shoulder at the top of the box, ripping a shot just inside of the left post.

POR - Natalia Kuikka (Olivia Moultrie), 79th minute: Smith played a ball toward the top of the box into the feet of Moultrie, who hit a one-touch pass leading Kuikka to goal for her to take a touch and slot the ball into the right corner.

POR - Sophia Smith (Yazmeen Ryan), 86th minute: Ryan hit a square pass toward the center of the field to Smith, who dribbled on top of the 18-yard box and curled a shot into the upper left corner of the goal.

POR - Taylor Porter (Yazmeen Ryan), 90+1 minute: Standing over the free kick, Ryan slotted the ball on the ground into the box for Porter, who took a touch onto her left foot and drove the ball into the far right-side netting.

Notes:

Portland is unbeaten in its last five matches (3-0-2), outscoring its opponents by a margin of 17-4.

Thorns FC have recorded consecutive shutout wins with four or more goals for the first time in club history.

Portland is the second team to score 10 goals in a two-match span in NWSL history after the North Carolina Courage scored 12 in a two-game stretch in Sept. 2019.

Thorns FC have scored multiple goals in five straight matches, marking the first time this has happened in the club's history.

It was the second time Portland has won a game by a margin of six goals. Thorns FC earned a 7-1 win over FC Kansas City on July 13, 2014 at Providence Park.

Portland is tied for the most shutouts in NWSL this season (5).

Thorns FC lead the league in goals (21) with the best goal differential (+14).

Becky Sauerbrunn registered her first career goal for Portland.

It marked Sauerbrunn's fifth career goal in the NWSL. Notably, the last time Sauerbrunn scored a goal in the league was with the Utah Royals against Thorns FC (Sept. 6, 2019).

Sauerbrunn recorded her first assist with the club. It marked her first assist since Aug. 13, 2017, with FC Kansas City in a road match against the Houston Dash.

Sauerbrunn is the ninth player to register an assist for Portland this season. Thorns FC have the most players with an assist in the league this season.

Natalia Kuikka registered her first career NWSL regular season goal.

Yazmeen Ryan recorded her first career multi-assist game and the 11th in club history.

Ryan leads the team with three assists this season.

Janine Beckie tallied her second assist of the season.

Sophia Smith scored her third career brace in the match.

It marked Smith's second consecutive match with a brace. She is the first player to record a brace in back-to-back games in club history.

Smith has eight goals this season, which surpasses her season total from the 2021 season of seven goals.

With her two goals, Smith has 15 career NWSL regular season goals, which is tied for fourth-most in club history.

Sophia Smith has three goals in two career home matches against Orlando.

Hina Sugita scored her second goal of the 2022 regular season.

Taylor Porter scored her first NWSL goal in the match.

Olivia Moultrie recorded an assist for a second straight game.
