PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland Thorns FC conceded a first-half penalty kick and pushed for an equalizer, outshooting the Kansas City Current 26-5 but were unable to find the game-tying goal, falling 1-0 on Saturday evening at Providence Park. Portland will travel for their next game, visiting NJ/NY Gotham FC on July 9.

Streak Snapped

Portland suffered its first loss at home in NWSL regular season play since Aug. 27, 2022. The loss snapped a streak of eight consecutive games without a loss at Providence Park. During that span Portland was 6-0-2 at home, outscoring its opponents by a margin of 24-6 in those matches. Tonight, also snapped a streak of 18 consecutive regular season matches with a goal for Thorns FC. It was just the fifth time Portland has been shutout at Providence Park in its last 20 regular season matches.

Goal-Scoring Plays

KCC - Michelle Cooper (penalty kick), 36th minute: Kansas City's Alexa Spaanstra dribbled down the left side of the box and Meghan Klingenberg committed the foul. Michelle Cooper stepped to the spot and converted into the right corner of the goal.

Notes:

Sam Coffey (6), Morgan Weaver (4) and Meghan Klingenberg (4) all created more chances than the entire Kansas City Current (3).

Coffey's six chances created are tied for the second-most in a single game this season.

It was the third time this season Coffey has created four or more chances in a match.

Coffey and Klingenberg rank tied for second in the NWSL with 30 chances created.

Weaver ranks fourth overall in the league in chances created (29).

Izzy D'Aquila finished with 10 shots. She joins Sophia Smith as the only player with 10 or more shots in a single match in 2023. Both players hit that number in matches against Kansas City.

Portland recorded 20 or more shots for the seventh time this season, which is the most of any team in the NWSL.

Thorns FC's 26 shots in tonight's match were their third-most in game in 2023. Portland has three games with 25 or more shots this season.

Portland surrendered a season-low five shots in the match. Thorns FC conceded just one shot in the second half.

Seven of Portland's 11 starters finished with a passing accuracy of 80 percent or higher in the match.

Kelli Hubly, Sam Coffey and Morgan Weaver are the only three players to start every game for Portland in 2023.

Hubly has started 36 consecutive NWSL regular season matches, dating back to April 30, 2022.
