CHICAGO - The Chicago Red Stars got themselves back into the win column tonight with a 1-0 takedown of San Diego Wave FC. Defender, Tatumn Milazzo, and forward, Ella Stevens, connected in the first half to get the game's lone goal. The Red Stars head to Houston Friday, July 7, to take on the Houston Dash.
KEY MOMENTS:
10' A ball launched from the back by Chicago's Emily Boyd rolls through San Diego's backline to find Bianca St-Georges who receives the ball, settles and picks out a pass to Ava Cook who, in turn, strikes the ball with one touch, but it goes just wide of the frame
17' San Diego's Kornieck sends a through ball to Rachel Hill, but Tierna Davidson's presence is enough to disrupt the shot and send the ball off the post
21' Red Stars' Ella Stevens finds Bianca St-Georges on a run down the right flank and gets her the ball all alone in front of San Diego's goalkeeper, but St-Georges' shot ricochets off the woodwork
45+2' Bianca St-Georges carries the ball into the attacking third, drops the ball off to Tatumn Milazzo who was on a run down the right flank and Milazzo sends a cross into a streaking Stevens who gets her head on the ball and into the net, 1-0 Chicago
48' Emily Boyd steps out of the net for Chicago to stop an attacking San Diego player, the ball falls back to a trailing Wave FC player, but their shot gets blocked by midfielder, Sam Fisher, who steps in front of the ball just in time
70' San Diego, on a run in Chicago's defensive third, get two clear shots at goal, but goalkeeper, Emily Boyd, steps in front of both shots and stops the danger
79' St-Georges goes on a run down the right side of the pitch, takes the ball all the way to San Diego 18-yard box and takes a shot that goes past the outstretched hand of the Wave's keeper, but goes wide of the net
GAME NOTES:
Emily Boyd tended goal for the first time in 2023 tonight, collecting her first clean sheet of 2023 to make a statement. Boyd faced 15 shots from San Diego, making four saves, four clearances and four punches throughout the match. Boyd marks her seventh career shutout with tonight's result, all in Chicago's net.
With their connection tonight, Tatumn Milazzo recorded her first assist of the season and Ella Stevens added to her goal total for the season. Ella now has four goals this season, tying her 2022 regular season total.
Chicago's victory over San Diego tonight is punctuated by domination of the Wave on the stats sheet as well as on the pitch. The Red Stars logged a 1.57 expected goal rate compared to the Wave's 1.19, winning 58.3 percent of aerial duels over San Diego's 41.7 percent and recording 13 total tackles throughout the match, while the Wave only collected 10.
