PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland Thorns FC earned a 4-0 shutout win over the Chicago Red Stars at Providence Park on Sunday afternoon. Thorns FC opened the match with goals from Kelli Hubly, Crystal Dunn and Olivia Moultrie in the first 16 minutes of the match, while Natalia Kuikka sealed the win with the fourth goal just three minutes into the second half.
Goalscorers and Playmakers
Hubly recorded her first goal of the season and the second of her career for Thorns FC. Dunn scored her team-leading fifth goal in the match, and is tied with Ashley Hatch (WAS), Alex Morgan (SD) and Lynn Williams (NJNY) for the most in the NWSL. She also tallied her first assist of the campaign. It marked Dunn's second multi-goal contributing performance this year after recording a brace against North Carolina on May 6. Moultrie scored her second goal of the season, recording her fourth goal contribution for Portland in as many matches (2g, 2a). Moultrie and Sophia Smith are the only two players to record a goal contribution in four straight regular season matches this NWSL season. Kuikka scored her first goal of the season and the second of her career for Thorns FC. Sam Coffey tallied two assists in the match, bringing her season total to three, while Hina Sugita recorded her first assist of 2023.
Party at Providence Park
Portland is undefeated (3-0-2) at Providence Park in the 2023 campaign, and unbeaten in seven consecutive matches (5-0-2) at home dating back to the 2022 campaign. This season, Thorns FC have outscored their opponents 14-4 at home. Today's victory also marked Portland's third shutout win at Providence Park this year. POR - Crystal Dunn (Hina Sugita), 14th minute: Hina Sugita shook off two Chicago defenders by cutting past them with the ball on the right side of the box and slotted a square pass to the center of the box. Crystal Dunn fired a one-touch shot into the back of the goal.
POR - Olivia Moultrie (Crystal Dunn), 16th minute: Crystal Dunn recovered the ball for Thorns FC near the corner of the 18-yard box and curled a pass behind Chicago's back line to find Olivia Moultrie, who tapped it into the net on her first touch.
POR - Natalia Kuikka (Sam Coffey), 48th minute: From the right wing, Sam Coffey delivered a cross to the back post. Natalia Kuikka jumped a headed the ball in for the goal.
