Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ) - Patience has been on display for the Bisons offense over the first two games of their series against the Mets, but it wasn't enough to save them in the second game on Wednesday night at Trenton Thunder Ballpark. The Bisons never led but were able to tie the score twice in the second and fourth before David Thompson broke a 4-4 tie with his sixth homer in the seventh inning to tie the series at a game apiece.
After an easy first inning that featured a couple of strikeouts, lefthander Anthony Kay's first rehab start for the Herd changed in the second when Patrick Mazeika led off with a double. Two batters later, Khalil Lee brought in the game's first run with a double down the left field line, which forced Kay to work from the stretch. He ended the inning with a strikeout of Cody Bohanek, leaving two runners on base to keep the deficit 1-0.
Settling into the middle of the lineup, Forrest Wall led off the second with a single before stealing second and third base. With one out, catcher Juan Graterol tied the score with a chopper to second base, marking the first time the Bisons would rally back from a deficit. During Kay's final inning in the fourth, he loaded the bases at the outset on an infield single and back-to-back walks. On a 1-0 pitch, Orlando Calixte cranked a double into center field to clear the bases and push the Mets lead to 4-1.
Casey Lawrence recorded the next five outs in relief, getting an inning-ending double play in the fifth which was started by left fielder Breyvic Valera. With one out and Thompson at second base, Valera sprinted in and snagged a sinking line drive off the bat of Mazeika, throwing back to the bag for the twin killing after making the diving catch.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Herd got a leadoff walk from Wall, who stole second for his third swipe of the night. A two out walk to Logan Warmoth brought up number nine hitter Richard Ureña, and the second baseman sliced a game-tying three-run homer off the right field foul pole to retie the game at four.
Despite their second comeback, the Bisons offense stalled and they could only generate three baserunners over the last five innings. With Dany Jimenez on for his second inning of relief in the seventh, Thompson elevated a 2-1 pitch just high enough over the left field wall to give the Mets a 6-4 lead with two outs. Kirby Snead struck out all four batters he faced, and Hobie Harris added two more in a scoreless ninth as Buffalo pitchers finished with 16 strikeouts over the course of the night.
Wall used his speed to leg out a two-out infield single in the eighth as he reached base three times for the second straight night. And Ureña narrowly missed his second homer with a two-out double off Mets closer Stephen Nogosek in the ninth. Christian Colon came up as the tying run 1-for-3 with a single and a walk, and battled for awhile before flying out to right to give the Mets game two.
The series continues on Thursday, June 3 at 7:00 PM when Jacob Waguespack (1-1, 4.67) takes the mound for the Bisons against Thomas Szapucki (0-1, 2.12). Pregame coverage with Gregg Caserta, Dave Schofield, and Dave Popkin starts at 6:30 with the Bisons Pregame Show on the Bisons Radio Network. It's Thirsty Thursday at Trenton Thunder Ballpark, and there will be postgame fireworks presented by Killarney's Publick House.
