San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (February 20, 2003) - San Jose SaberCats defensive specialist Clevan Thomas, the league leader in interceptions, was today named the Arena Football League's Defensive Player of the Month for February.
Thomas (5-10, 195) collected six interceptions and five pass breakups in San Jose's four February games. The Florida State product had at least one interception in all four games and had his first two two-interception games as San Jose posted a 2-2 record for the month.
With a score on an interception return at Los Angeles on Feb. 9 and another at Georgia on Feb. 16, Thomas became the first San Jose player to return an interception for a score in consecutive games.
Last season's Rookie and Defensive Player of the Year is on pace to break the league record of 12 interceptions in a season, set by Dameon Porter of Chicago in 2001 and Tracey Perkins of Tampa Bay in 1997.
The SaberCats complete their season opening stretch of five of their first six games on the road when they battle the Chicago Rush in a nationally televised NBC game on Sunday, March 9 at 3:00 p.m. (PT).
San Jose returns to the HP Pavilion to take on the Buffalo Destroyers on Friday, March 14 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for that game and the remaining six home games are available and can be purchased through TicketMaster and at the HP Pavilion box office.
