San Jose SaberCats News Release

SAN JOSE, Calif. (March 7, 2003) - Offensive specialist James Hundon, the SaberCats leading scorer and a top offensive threat, was put on injured reserve today following surgery to repair a hernia. The team also placed linemen Dan Loney (knee) and Brian Lytle (ankle) on IR.

Hundon played the first five games of the season with his hernia, but elected to have surgery to repair the damage and attempt to return to action before the end of the regular season.

Team physician Dr. Arthur Ting performed the surgery on Monday and medical personnel termed the procedure successful. Hundon will be lost for six to eight weeks while he recovers and undergoes rehabilitation.

Former Carolina Cobras offensive specialist Aaron Bailey, who was acquired by San Jose in an off-season trade, has been activated to take Hundon's roster spot. Bailey will play when the SaberCats take on Chicago this Sunday.

Lytle and Loney both sustained injuries in San Jose's win at Las Vegas on March 2. Loney tweaked his knee and Lytle endured a high ankle sprain. Linemen Frank Beede and Cedric Pittman were activated off IR to take the roster spots.

The SaberCats complete their season opening stretch of five of their first six games on the road when they battle the Chicago Rush in a nationally televised NBC game on Sunday, March 9 at 3:00 p.m. (PT).

San Jose returns to the HP Pavilion to take on the Buffalo Destroyers on Friday, March 14 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for that game and the remaining six home games are available and can be purchased through TicketMaster and at the HP Pavilion box office.
