Carolina Cobras News Release
CHARLOTTE Â The Carolina Cobras announced today that they have signed seven-year AFL veteran QB Ron Lopez, along with DS John Barnes and OL/DL Curt Lessman. The team also activated WR/DB Tramain Jones and FB/LB Glen Mitts from injured reserve.
Earlier in the week, the Cobras placed OS Ben Bronson on injured reserve and waived WR/LB Gabe Amey, QB Glen Gauntt and OL/DL Zac Zedalis, signing Amey and Gauntt to the practice squad. In addition, the team activated and released WR/LB Rj Anderson and WR/DB Terence Davis from injured reserve.
Lopez brings seven years of AFL experience to the Cobras. His last season in the AFL came in 2001 with the Oklahoma Wranglers, when he posted career-highs of 239 completions and 425 attempts en route to 2,714 passing yards and 39 touchdowns. The 6-5, 220-pound Los Angeles native has career numbers of 941-of-1667 for 11,712 yards and 187 touchdowns. He played nine games for the Wichita Stealth in af2 last season.
Barnes and Lessman are both AFL rookies. Barnes was named defensive and special teams player of the year at Arkansas-Pine Bluff last year. He was waived during training camp by the Grand Rapids Rampage. Lessman was First Team All-Mid America Intercollegiate Athletics Association as a senior at Northwest Missouri State in 2001. He was waived by the Chicago Rush during training camp.
Bronson, the Cobras leading receiver with 25 receptions, was placed on injured reserve after suffering a bone bruise in his knee in last week's game at Grand Rapids.
The Cobras play host to the Las Vegas Gladiators this Sunday, March 9, at 12:00 p.m. In an effort to accommodate as many fans as possible, the team has opened up an additional 1,000 $15 tickets for all remaining home games. In each of the Cobras two home games this season, $15 and $8 tickets have been sold out.
Tickets for Sunday's game and all home games can be purchased at the Charlotte Coliseum box office, at all Ticketmaster outlets, online at www.ticketmaster.com or by phone at 704-522-6500. Single-game tickets for all 2003 home games are available in the following prices: $8 (lower level end zones), $15 (lower level corners), $25 (lower level sideline) and $50 (lower level sideline).
