NEW YORK â Colorado offensive specialist DAMIAN HARRELL, San Jose defensive specialist CLEVAN THOMAS, Orlando Predator wide receiver/linebacker CORY FLEMING, Orlando Predator offensive specialist TRAVIS MCGRIFF and Grand Rapids kicker BRIAN GOWINS have been named Offensive Player, ADT Defensive Player, Ironman, Rookie and Kicker of the Month, respectively, for February of the 2003 season.
Harrell (6-3, 200, Florida State), in his fifth AFL season, earned Offensive Player of the Month by hauling in 30 receptions for 475 yards, 15 touchdowns and a league-leading 96 points. The former Seminole recorded two five-touchdown games (against Georgia and Los Angeles) and is amongst the league leaders in receptions, yards, touchdowns and scoring. This marks the first time Harrell has earned an AFL monthly honor.
Thomas (5-10, 197, Florida State), who is in his second AFL season, led the League in interceptions with six during the month of February, returning two for touchdowns for the SaberCats (3-2). The 2002 Rookie and ADT Defensive Player of the Year averaged 18.5 yards on 20 kickoff returns, including a long of 45, while adding 8.0 total tackles, five pass breakups, and two fumble recoveries. This marks the second time that Thomas has earned an AFL monthly honor.
Fleming (6-2, 215, Tennessee), who is in his seventh AFL season, led the Predators (5-0) on both sides of the ball during in February by tallying 35 receptions for 389 yards and 11 touchdowns. The former Volunteer averaged 18 yards on two kickoff returns, including a long of 30, while recording 5.0 total tackles and two passes defensed from "jack" linebacker. This marks the first time that Fleming earned an AFL monthly honor.
McGriff (5-8, 185, Florida) led the Predators (5-0) from the offensive specialist position. The former Gator had 26 receptions for 395 yards and nine receiving touchdowns in February. He also recorded 248 return yards, including a 132-yard performance in Week 3 against Dallas. This marks the first time that McGriff has earned an AFL award.
Gowins (5-10, 174, Northwestern), who is in his fourth AFL season, helped lift the Rampage (4-1) with clutch kicking in February. The former Wildcat connected on game-winning kicks in contests in Week 2 (against Colorado) and Week 3 (vs. New York). He connected on 5 of 6 field goals, 28 of 38 extra point attempts and tallied 43 points for the month. This marks the first time that Gowins has earned an AFL weekly honor.
