Thomas Crowned Northern League Rookie Pitcher of the Year
September 16, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
He was the backbone of the Winnipeg Goldeyes bullpen and today he was awarded with a Northern League honour.
Relief pitcher Ian Thomas has been named the Northern League's 2010 Rookie Pitcher of the Year.
A left hander from Virginia Beach, Va., Thomas, 23, had a sparkling 1.64 ERA in 55 innings over 34 outings. He had a team-best 5-1 record coming out of the bullpen and struck out an astounding 60 batters in 55 innings, while walking just 20. He also picked up four saves and opposing batters hit just .182 when facing him. At Canwest Park, his ERA was even lower at 1.48.
It was Thomas' second season with the Goldeyes. Because he pitched less than 30 innings in 2009, he retained his rookie status for the 2010 season.
"He was very valuable out of the bullpen this season," Goldeyes manager Rick Forney said. "He definitely improved since his first season. It can be an adjustment for some of these guys coming straight out of college to have success, but he was able to do that. He came into camp fresh and his velocity was better."
The Northern League will announce other 2010 award winners later this week.
