Third quarter lifts Yakama over Xplosion, 108-98

PITTSBURGH, January 24, 2007 - Shawn Hawkins scored a career-high 28 points and Kevin Pittsnogle added 25 to help Pittsburgh (2-21) build a 17-point first quarter lead, but Yakama (19-7) stormed back in the third quarter and hung on for a 108-98 victory in Continental Basketball Association action at Mellon Arena.

The Black and Gold got off to a fast start against the Sun Kings sprinting out to a 22-5 lead in the first quarter ad led by 17 with 5:07 left in the period. Hawkins led in the early going netting nine points. Yakama began to cut into the lead as the quarter closed, but Pittsburgh captured the opening frame, 24-18.

The Xplosion extended their lead in the second quarter, winning the period 27-24, and led at intermission, 51-42.

Things went sour for Pittsburgh in the third quarter as the defending CBA Champions and league leading Sun Kings exploded to win the third quarter, 33-17 and take the lead after three periods, 75-68.

The third quarter remained tight, but the Xploson was unable to close the gap dropping the final quarter, 33-30, and the game 108-98.

Lewis Monroe added 14 points and Dajuan Tate chipped in with 10 points for Pittsburgh. Ralph Holmes led all scorers with 37 points. Rob Griffin added 24 points.

The Xplosion sets off on a five-game road trip tomorrow, making stops in Albany, Butte and Great Falls, before returning to Pittsburgh on February 9.

NOTES: The Xplosion's Kevin Pittsnogle was named to represent the American Conference at the 2007 CBA All-Star Game in Butte, Montana on February 6.
