Third-Period Troubles Lead to Rangers' Downfall Against the Soo

Kitchener lost 6-3 to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in their last game at home before the holiday break. Kitchener was missing Filip Mesar and Carson Rehkopf, while the Soo was missing Owen Allard and Arttu Karki to the World Juniors.

Andrew MacNiel made his OHL debut for Kitchener in the loss while Trent Swick extended his point streak to four games with a goal and two assists on the night. Adrian Misaljevic also scored and recorded two assists in the game. However, Matthew Sop's nine-game point streak came to an end as he did not make it on the scoresheet tonight.

1st Period

SOO 0, KIT 1

0:37 Adrian Misaljevic (19) - Trent Swick, Hunter Brzustewicz

Adrian Misaljevic gave the fans an early Christmas gift, scoring just 37 seconds into the game. Hunter Brzustewicz took a shot from the point that was blocked by Trent Swick. Swick found it and sent a shot off the pads that bounced out to Misaljevic. He then rocketed the puck home gifting an early lead to the Rangers.

SOO 1, KIT 1

6:51 Tate Vader (1) - Connor Clattenburg, Andrew Gibson

Four seconds following a Rangers penalty for too many men on the ice, Tate Vader scored his first career OHL goal. Connor Clattenburg carried the puck down and behind the Kitchener goal line, allowing Vader to sneak into the slot. Clattenburg found Vader and he put it by Jackson Parsons to tie the game at one.

SOO 2, KIT 1

16:06 Alex Kostov (6) - SHG

31 seconds into a Kitchener powerplay the puck was turned over on a Rangers breakout, leaving Alex Kostov all alone in the slot. Kostov buried it shorthanded giving Soo the lead.

2nd Period

SOO 2, KIT 2

8:31 Trent Swick (14) - Adrian Misaljevic, Hunter Brzustewicz

Trent Swick tied the game on a rebound. Hunter Brzustewicz held the puck at the point and sent it down to the faceoff circle where Adrian Misaljevic stood. Misaljevic sent it off the far pad of Charlie Schenkel and the rebound came right to Swick who tapped it into an empty net.

10:59 Tanner Lam (7) - Trent Swick, Adrian Misaljevic - PPG

A penalty to Kirill Kudryavtsev for hooking at 9:19 allowed the Rangers to take the lead. A wonderful keep by Hunter Brzustewicz on a spin move sent the puck cross-ice to Adrian Misaljevic. Misaljevic centered the puck, but it got deflected up towards the net to Trent Swick. Swick sent a pass to Tanner Lam who put the Blueshirts on top.

SOO 3, KIT 3

18:56 Justin Cloutier (15) - Brenden Sirizzotti, Jack Beck - PPG

Luke Ellinas was given a four-minute double-minor penalty for high sticking, sending the Greyhounds to the power play which led them to tie the game. A tic-tac-toe passing play in the Rangers zone put everyone out of position and allowed Justin Cloutier to put the puck behind Parsons.

3rd Period

SOO 4, KIT 3

5:45 Julian Fantino (6) - Brady Martin, Travis Hayes

Brady Martin found Julian Fantino cutting into the zone. Martin hit Fantino as he took stride in the slot and sniped it top corner over Parsons.

SOO 5, KIT 3

6:36 Brenden Sirizzotti (11) - Matthew Virgilio, Jack Beck

Jack Beck carried the puck around the zone looking for options. He saw Matthew Virgilio cutting towards the slot who charged in toward Parsons. Virgilio then fed Brenden Sirizzotti sitting alone in front of the net and tapped it in extending their lead to two.

SOO 6, KIT 3

9:52 Kirill Kudryavtsev (4) - Marco Mignosa - SHG

The Greyhounds scored their third unanswered goal of the period on the penalty kill. A backhanded pass from Marco Mignosa at center ice sent Kirill Kudryavtsev into the Rangers' zone where he went bar down on the breakout.

First Star: Brenden Sirizzotti (1G, 1A)

Second Star: Trent Swick (1G, 2A)

Third Star: Charlie Schenkel (23 Saves, 3 GA)

The Goalies:

Charlie Schenkel was the third star of the game as he made 23 of 26 possible saves in the win. His record moves to 15-7-2-0. Jackson Parsons stopped 18 of 24 shots in the defeat putting his record at 16-6-1-0.

Up Next: Kitchener will travel to Barrie tomorrow for a 7:30 pm start for their last game before the holiday break. Kitchener won the only matchup between the two teams this season 8-0 at home on October 13th. The Rangers will return from the break to take on Flint on December 29th at home.
